I ordered a Palm set of Flexcut Chisels yesterday. I can't wait to get them and try my hand a carving. Anybody got any suggestions for the learning curve of relief carving?

The most obvious is, don't practice on the stock, get a piece of scrap maple and then either go to a class or get a video ..... I should talk, I've chickened out on all the above. :>)

I have been putting it off myself. Recon it's time to work at it. I'm not as worried about the actual carving as keeping the chisels sharp. Probably best to get a video as suggested. A picture is worth a thousand words. Packdog

Before I built my first gun, I went out and bought 6 of the best chisels they had to offer at a woodworking, speciality store. I probably paid too much for them, but after 10 years, they are as sharp as the day I got them and I have never had to try to sharpen them. I took great care using them and have them hidden from my dear wife cause I caught her using an old hardware store chisel for a screwdriver once. I have trouble putting a fine edge on the little cheapo knife I use to cut my fingernails with, but remember that's comming from a guy who, for some reason, can't knap a flint. :>)

I need some of those then. Ha-ha I keep a sharpening ston on the work bench. Chisel a little then sharpen. I been using the kind TOW sells. Couldn't tell you the brand. I have seen several post they like the Flexcut and they are shaped different to fit your hand so I thought I would try them.
