Do most of you use one or two pins for the thimbles? I have seen originals done both ways. I don't see any reason to use 2 if it is inlet tight? Am I missing something or would it be just to keep it from rocking back and forth. Also do you use the same size pin as the barrel lugs? How about what size do you use? Packdog

I usually use skinny wire brads less than 1/16 in. in dia. and only one to a thimble and one to a lug. If everything fits good and tight in the first place, I don't see any reason for more aaand you can always go larger if need be.

I used 3/32 rod/nails on the one I'm building now. They seem a little big but it is to late now! They are easy enough to cover up with a little beeswax after I'm finished. Packdog

I don't like small pins. All my pins are tapered and go in one way (I put all pins in the same direction as the lock screws). I usually do something like .089" (I think that's just under 3/32"). As far as one pin or two, it depends upon what kind of gun you're building. Some original makers and "schools" used one pin, and others used two. For example, I am just now finishing up a Berks county gun and every single solitary Berks county gun I have ever seen in photos or in person, have had two pins in the ramrod pipes, very near the ends.

I make my own pins out of finishing nails and taper them so they will tighten up and I also put them in on one side of the gun-from left to right. After I get the pins tapered and fitted to the ram rod thimble hole I fire blue them after I round the ends. I only use one pin to a thimble except the entry thimble which I use two on it.
