In the past I have used hot browning with some sucsess. Thought I would try the Laurel Mountain cold browning this time. Started with the lock. Getting a real nice dark copper color with about 4 applications but not brown. Will this turn brown with later coats? Was there a preperation problem (sanded all parts with 200 grit dry black paper)? Thank you.

JNerren, the slow rust process is the best way to go. Follow Birddog's advice and use a good quality browning solution. I like Laural Mountain Forge brand, but any good quality solution will do a good job. You can also blue a gun using the same process. The only different is you boil the metal in water before you card it off. Some of the most beautiful blued guns I have ever saw have been blued this way.

Just reading through this tread, and am kinda curious (and maybe not too bright ) I see the term "card" when refering to applying the browning solution. I am not familiar with this term , would someone explain what this means. I have used Birch Wood Casey's Plumb Brown on a couple of rifles and found that to work well for me. Soggy

JNerren The copper color results from rubbing vigorously (or in one place) too much or too long. What you want to do is long swipes covering as much as you can as uniformly as possible. The color will turn brown. We had some copper color show up on the lock and I think a bit on the barrel, but it is a rich chocolate color now. It works well particularly if you happen to live in a humid area as the humidity will aid you in reaching your goal of rich brown faster.
Hope this explains it to you.

Quite honestly, I love the copper coloring and have yet to master it...just seems to give it that look of being somewhere between hard use and polished white. Just my opinion though, I also go for the dark grey/black/brown too. Ya, I'm odd! ;D
