;DI haven't been here before but time has come for me to build a rifle to represent my company. I intend to have a theme for the construction. I've decided to work on the idea of "beauty through strength" as you might expect I'm planning on the rifle being very strong and look much like the classic walnut stocked models of old.
I plan to make my own stock is a custom laminated style. I will use five laminates three of walnut and two of ebony. My question for the forum is does anyone know a good place to purchase the wood for such a stock?
If you care to know I’m using a laminated stock for strength and walnut and ebony to have a classic look. Also I plan to have two carved figures on the stock in the largest part of stock. All the work will be hand carved as I prefer parting tool and gouge to a blasted carving for a stock of this work level. There is certainly no need to try to save a few hours on a complete custom model.
For details I plan on having the receiver engraved with acanthus leaves and vines. There is no room for an engraved image so the scroll will be alone but I think I can have some silver or gold gelding done to again show a strong piece with the beauty of metal a highlight.
This rifle is a Savage so it has that sorry plastic trigger guard. So it will be no trick to have a metal guard to show extra strength but I think it needs just the right color to not conflict with any gold or sliver touches I choose for the receiver etching. If you know where I can get a metal guard for a Savage 10 then let me know. If not I’ll mill it myself in the machine shop. I might do that anyway if I don’t like the guards that already exist.
A custom sling and lugs are not a problem as I know a leather worker of the highest order and there is little problem in providing lugs spacers with style and color. Other details will be worked on as the project evolves. But I’m sure a billet set of mounts and rings (with engraving) are in order and a Leupold VX-III (because it has the gold ring) will be set for sights.
