I'm sitting here eating some left over deer stew I made a couple of days ago and got to thinking that there might be a couple recipes I'd like to try. Mine is a simple one. Deer meat from the hind leg cut in about 1" cubes. I added diced up celery, carrots and potatoes. I put in a can of tomatoe soup and instead of water I put in a can of a dark beer(Guinness). I seasoned it with salt and pepper and added a tsp of pepper flakes. It turned out great and my wife liked it too. Anyone have something different I might like to try.

This is from a Remington Wildgame Cookbook. Don't ask how old it is, I ain't telling! I bought it new, and liked it so much I bought another one just in case I wore out the first one..... ;D
Wild Game Ragout
3# Venison, Elk, Caribou, Antelope, Moose, etc. 3 tbsp. Olive Oil 3 Lg. Onions, chopped 5 Garlic Cloves, Crushed 1/2# Bacon, chopped 1 tsp. Curry Powder 1 can Tomato Soup, undiluted 1 1/2 qts. water 2 tsp. burbon 1/4 cup beer 1 tbsp. salt 1/2# Fresh Mushrooms, sliced
Cut meat into cubes, about 1 1/2" square. Heat olive oil in electric skillet, add meat, onions, garlic and bacon. Cook until all is nicely browned, stirring frequently. Add all other ingredients, except mushrooms, cover and simmer for 50 minutes. Add mushrooms and simmer for 10 more minutes. Serve over rice, serves 8.
It can be made a day ahead of schedule and re-heated.
I've browned the meat & bacon in a skillet, then threw all of it except the mushrooms in a crockpot, set the timer to cook for 6 hrs on med, and went out hunting for the day. When I got in, I turned it on high and threw in the mushrooms. I made some minute rice, and served. The timing was pretty good.
I pre-cut all the ingredients before I left for the hunting trip, so it didn't take much to prepare. I did find out that I needed less than the required water if I made it in the crockpot - about 1/4 to 1/2 cup less.
Try the skillet method first, so you know what to expect if you try the crockpot method later.

You guys are making me hungry! Both of those recipes sound good to me. I cant seem to find grandma's stew recipe but I can give you a general idea. It is a good one and is a little different from others.
Cider Stew: venison chunks carrots potatoes onion apple cider raisins salt & pepper
I know it sounds a little strange but believe me it is absolutely delicious. The apple cider makes a very good broth and the raisins plump up like grapes again. You just have to wing it a little since I don't have the exact proportions anymore. Brown the meat, keep the drippings, slice and dice, pour, simmer and enjoy. Also check out the recipes on the Michigan Sportsman's Forum. Those guys and gals in Michigan sure can cook. Lots of good recipes there. If you are into outdoor and traditional cooking look for post by the guy called "SalmonSmoker". He has some interesting ideas and all the recipes that have tried have been quite good.
Hey Bubba, do you know these any of these folks?
