Grabbing the old 20ga. SXS flinter and see how I do. I wonder how long it has been since this 1790's+or- shotgun went hunting?

Dave emailed me these 2 pictures asking me to post them for him. I'll let him tell about them. Looks like they had a great day in the field.

Well I am the old fart in the camos, in the back row (well duh!). This is with that 20ga. flinter. I was very pleased with my take of 8 birds. It seemed as if I was usually empty when the birds came through at close range and some of these birds were dropped further out that I thought possible. The two teenage boys in T shirts each limited out with 15 apiece. These boys are GREAT kids. They are seniors in high school with my daughter. My daughter laughs at me because the boys are always asking when or what I am hunting and they are always ready to go. Suze says, pretty bad Dad, when a guy at your age has to wait for school to let out for your friends to go play. hehe We were hunting a 4 acre sweet corn patch that paths were mowed through it and small 20ft. trees were stood up in them after the mowing. There had to be hundreds of doves coming in and out. It was awesome. Yes, my 3 1/2lb shot pouch only had about 6 shots left in it when we quit. I was shooting 7/8oz of 7 1/2's.

I have been thinking about trying dove hunting, but need some info that I can't find in the hunting regulation books.
Do you need a federal bird stamp? Do shotguns have to be pluged for only 3 shots? Legal limit in Indiana? Can you use lead shot?

Most of those questions may be related to your state laws. Here is Ohio you only need a small game tag. You can use lead shot and most people do not bother to plug thier ML'ing shotguns for doves. But, modern guns can shoot no more than three times without reloading. I have went ahead and plugged all my guns. I have found that if I have not connected by the second shot, the game is over, at least for me.

Thanks for the info guys. I'll go buy me federal stamp, and probably head for the field for the 1st time tomorow. The bean field behind my sister house has been loaded with doves the last few days and thats why I have been considering giving it a shot so thats the first place that I'll go.

Legal limit in Indiana? Can you use lead shot? For Dove Hunting in Indiana, you do not need a Federal Bird Stamp. But you need a State "Habitat" stamp. Shotguns MUST be pluged to hold no more than three shells. I believe the legal daily limit on Doves here is 15 birds. Yes, you may use lead shot on private property but on public hunting areas I simply don't know.

I almost went this morning after I got off work @ 8AM, but didn't because the local post ofice was out of Federal stamps and I thaught I needed one. I have a lifetime license and the state bird stap is covered in that so I guess that all needed to do was plug a gun and go if the state stamp is all I need. I guess that I'll talk to a CO tonight at work. I dispatch at the Police departmens so all I need to do is wait till I here one on the radio and have him give me a call or stop in. I guess that I should have done that in the 1st place, but I realy don't like talking to CO's when I do not absolutly have to. Strange thing is I did not mind talking to them before I got a job in law enforcement, and now I hate talking to them.

high teck I looked for my copy, could not find it, you need a copy of the Early migratory bird regs, that is where you can find out.
