I know the 17 Cal. is getting fairly popular and believe I would like to have one. I am looking for something like a Savage or Ruger bolt action that would be accurate. Beauty is not even a consideration. I don't want to spend more than necessary because I would put a good quality scope on it. Any reccomendations and info would be appreciated. Also, what would be the maximum range for say crows, squirrel etc.?

i LOVE my 17 HMR. ive used it for squirl BUT you have to hit them in the head. if not you make a mess of them. ive killed ground hog out to 173 yards. for crow id say 200 yards. im not too sure about the 17 mach 2. its only 300 fps slower so id say it would be good for squirl and crow. the only down fall is you have to get use to compasating for the wind. its inly a 17 grn bullet and is suceptable tocross winds. if you look an hornady's web sight it will give you the drop and bullet specs. www.hornady.com/shop/?ps_session=9e09896180d38522dd3cb50ae5b65179&page=shop%2Fbrowse&category_id=e4c1104b0d6d112d2b80155f75b83ff2here are the 3 bullets from hornady and the mach 3 is 450 FPS slower at 2100 fps and the HMR at 2550 fps .they are a ballistic type bullet but you are shooting varments so no biggie. P.S. they are VERY ACCURATE so head shots are a good possibility.

Ozark.
I have a break open NEF 17 HMR with a leupold 3 X 9 Vari X II. I love it and everything Whyohe says is right on about destructiveness on small creatures.
I will add that I've shot a few dozen eastern woodchucks with this cartridge ranging from CLOSE to about 150 yds. I have seen results from "bang-flop" to running like hell for 20 feet and staggering at the last minute before reaching the hole, swaggering around and then dying. These were from chest/shoulder shots. Almost the same thing you get when shooting whitetails with shotgun slugs....different reactions but all resulting in death.
They are interesting little guns and bullets. Almost too much for rabbits and squirrels and not enough for woodchucks...in an ideal world. However...they are fun AND accurate. I love mine.
Oh, one thing it's GREAT for: We keep the red suirrels and chipmunks beat back around camp. There is nothing better then this little gun. You can shoot VERY effectively with authority at the 50 and under yards that we shoot them at. And they pop like water baloons!

For inexpensive and high quality I like the CZ-452. Just remember that the scope dovetail is 11 mm not 3/8 inch. Bill

I have a Marlin 17vs that I bought from Bubba a couple of years ago that I love. Very accurate and any of them deserve the best glass that you can afford. It has accounted for a few chucks out to 150 yards with no problem.

ozark, you can get a marlin with a heavy barrel at wally world for 179.00. very accurate. andits worth putting the good glass on it.
ozark have you tried the 20 grn tips by hornady. they work better in chucks. drop alittle more at longer distances but worth it .

It has taken care of a couple crows at 165yds, a few dozen coons, head shot squirrels out to 100yds, and has taken countless starlings......even one fox. My poor .22's have practically gone into retirement!

I have a NEF .17HMR that I purchased used with a Simmons 8 point 3-9X40 on it for $130 It's a good shooter. As already meantioned it will tear a squirrel up, but if you want to sit on the edge of an open field and shoot them at 150+ yards this rifle will do it. I have not shot anything else with it yet so I can't comment on what it does to other game

It has accounted for a few chucks out to 150 yards with no problem. DC My favorite gun is my 17 HMR Marlin Lam SS. I have a cheap but excellent scope on it - BSA 3X12 AO Sweet 17. I can routinely shoot 1/2 MOA @ 100 yds and 2/5 MOA @ 200 yds(yes .8" 200 yd gps with no wind. This is unbelievable but true. Best groups with 20 and 17 g Hornady but almost the same with 17 CCI and Rem. The range compensating turret works great. Actual drop - 17 Horn dead on @ 100 yds is 8" low @ 200. It really kills things like foxes, coyotes, etc. It is my cheapest yet favorite gun. I have Jim Borden hunter 6PPC and Fred Moreo 6 PPC - both for hunting and they are excellent to say the least; yet I usually take the 17 HMR. No recoil: a 22 LR virtually bruises my shoulder in comparison.

I have 3 17 HMR rifles . One Marlin 917 VS , One CZ 452 American and one Custom Remington 597 . A friend of mine has one of the Savage rifles , it's a heavy stainless model with a laminant stock . They all shoot real well ! Pick the one you like the best ! I have never heard of a 17 HMR that didn't shoot real good . At least with it's preferred ammo . I shoot mostly the Hornady ammo with the 17 grain V max bullet because it shoots good in all of the rifles I have . The 20 grain Hornady load shoots very good in the Marlin and the custom Remington but it doesn't do so well in my CZ or my friends Savage . I am a BUG fan of the 17 calibers ! Centerfire or rimfire , I like them all !

Ben, these little grass burners are almost as addictive as the 10ML's. I'm shooting a plain jane synthetic savage w/ a 3x9x40 Leupold and on a good day you can lay a dime on top of three shots @ 100. they are an absolute blast to shoot trash with. mine is pre accu trigger but it's real easy to drop a few pounds off in just a minute or two. if you decide to go w/ the savage PM me, I found some boyds thumbhole stocks cheap.
