I know what your thinking and its not about that! I mean, does it matter "enough" to warrant having an extra 2 inches in "barrel length" (26" versue 24") with a .300 win mag?

I don't have a 300win mag,but just about everything around it. IMO maybe a little velocity will be lost with the shorter barrrels. I've got 22 and 24 inch barrels that are as accurate as my 26's. Things to consider are use (bench shooting or huntin from a climber) weight (will this gun be carried great distances). Only you can decide which fits your needs the best. Good luck and happy huntin, DM

Yes! What I mean is that I plan to do all. stand sitting, in all kinds, still hunting and long distance shooting. Truly I am not so concerned about weight, as I love to work hard!

I would go with the 24in UNLESS you are getting a heavy barrel version.
You can easily burn all the powder in 24 inches.
My 2 cents worth ( one cent per inch in question ).

Imay have to agree with bubba(Please don't tell). A24 inch barrel will probally do every thing you want to do. I have a 26inch sendero. Love the gun but is a bit much in a portable climber. Good luck.DM

I do have Rem 700 - 300 win. mag. with 24 in. SS. barrel (approx.21" used by bullet) It is real accurate. Have shot may nickle size and smaller groups. If you look at most reloading manuals they work up loads in a 24 in barrel. The extra 2 inches might add 50 to 100 fps to the speed. Is the longer gun worth it and my 24 is as accurate as I will ever need.

General concesus is 24 min for large case or mag chamberings. The loss as mentioned would be 50-100fps in velocity. no difference in accuracy potential between a 24-26 IME.
In a factory barrel I'd lean to the lower side of 25fps/per1" as rough estimate this equates to very little in the field. Just go with what you feel works best.

I have heard that a barrel is like a whip when fired it does just that, ever so minor that it has to be seen with a special camera. I am quoting just what I heard, correct me if I am wrong which I have been known to be in the past. My opinion, comparing a 22,24,26 And 28 inch barrel, if this be the case and the barrels are of the same thickness, wouldn't the longer barrels tend to do this more? unless the longer barrels were alot heavier than the short barrels, this would not happen? I have several rifles that have 22" barrels on up. The 22" barrel is a tack driver. Then on the other hand about velocity, I have always said velocity doesn't make accuracy. If accuracy goes out the door what good is velocity. Just my one cent, I don't have as much as Bubba.

I had a 300 wthby with a 24" barrel and it was the worst shooting gun I ever owned, traded it and got a 26" barrel and it is the most accurate rifle I own. I know these are not a 300 Win.but close. I believe wthby. stopped making the 24" barrel. Redclub
