Any of you own and/or have shot any AR's, such as from DPMS, Armalite, etc...? I am looking at buying a DPMS AR in .260 Remington, as it would seem to be a fun shooter and likely a good whitetail rifle as well. Kind of pricey though, $1,100 or so.

I would give serious thought to a 300 whisper(uses 223 mags), since anything shooting the 260 wont be an ar-15 lower, must be an ar-10 lower? There are many pitfalls with non-ar15 products............. ever wonder why colt doesnt make the 7.62x39 ar anymore?
-just my 2 cents worth.

Bubba, I am new to the whole AR thing. I have shot many M-16's in the Army/Reserves which are pretty much the same thing, but like the idea of a larger caliber/more power like a .260 without going to like a .308. I mentioned DPMS specifically, because they are made in Minnesota about an hour away and I shoot fairly regularily at their range in St. Cloud MN. Thanks for the suggestion.

just something to consider, the mags seem to be a real issue with the non-ar15 sizes, i guess we have had a bazillion years to perfect the mil-spec ar-15 mag, the ar-10 size is physically a larger opening for the mag. You might also speak with DaveD, he had a WSSM of some caliber, might be 25, mighta been 243, I dont recall, but I think that it shot well. The 300 whisper, if you dont already know is a 223 case necked up to 30cal. It approaches the 30-30 and 7.62x39 in power, and uses std ar-15 magazines, a real plus the way I see it. Actually I think that the cases originate from a 221 fireball, hence they are labeled two ways, 300 whisper which is a patented case, and then the generic 300/221 fireball is the other label. Let us know what way you proceed, I wanted to build one up with an RRA lower and a 300 whisper upper, had the lower and never got around to finding the upper.......... my loss -bubba

"had the lower and never got around to finding the upper.........." Did ya lose your dentures again? The DPMS is a nice setup, and yes it is on the AR-10 platform. I have built MANY a AR-15 setup, so I am kinda partial to them over the AR-10's. If the State you hunt in does not have a restriction on the bullet diameter, the .223 is a good deer gun. NOT shooting XM193/M855/SS109/Q3131(A)! Using a good hunting load like Corbon's 53gr Barnes Triple X or Winchester 64gr SP will yield excellent results. When hunting season is over, you can practice with MilSurp ammo. If you REALLY want to have fun, buy a nice AR-15 or a Lower. Then get a 6.8 SPC Upper. This is a 6.8 x 43mm. Same bore dimension of the .270 Winchester. Ammo is being made by Hornady Custom, Silver State Armory, and Remington. All are available from MidwayUSA. This is a wicked load for hunting, and not much more recoil than the 5.56. (A lot less than the .308) www.demigod.org/~zak/firearms/6.8SPC/faq.phpwww.midwayusa.com/ebrowse.exe/browse?TabID=3&Categoryid=9940&categorystring=653www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=121&t=282708Bubba..... The reason Colt quit making the 7.62 x 39 was that they couldn't figure out how to keep their bolts from breaking! Bret

I thought it was cuz they couldnt figure out how to reliably get the round from the magazine into the chamber!
does the 6.8 use the same dimension magazine as an ar mag?

You know jjw, that Bwaddy is a sharp guy, he just hides it well Despite what all others say about him, I think he might be right this time, check out the 6.8, I totally forgot about that round, perfect whitetail round.
