ok ,again i've read an artical that has given me a question for all you. i've read that short barrel are (can be) more accurate than a longer barrel cause the bullet wont be as effected by the wip of the barrel. also that the " heavy " barrel is NOT for heat but for stiffening the barrel to help take out the"wip" in it. i've always thought that the heavy barrel gave you more accurecy cause of its slower to get hot. now the writer says that heat can affect POI but its not the reason for the heavy barrel. what do you all say?

I agree about the whip.............. off a bench.
free hand I can hold a longer barrel more steady than I can a shorty.
I like a 26incher for free hand, as long as I dont have to hold it there all day !

I agree - longer barrel is easier to hold steady, also it allows more fps.
But in the nasty thick stuff, shorter is better!

Longer barrel will be easier to shoot accurately. Short and long will both shoot good but it's the shooter. If the end of a short barrel, say a 6 inch pistol move a 1/16 inch it will be farther off that if a 26 inch barrel moves a 1/16

Barrel harmonics are important and heat effects harmonics. The most accurate rifle I've seen only had a 22" barrel. Of course it was a full bull barrel and shot paper at 100yds. Long range rifles like for Palma shoots have the long barrels also for increased sight radius using iron sights. But longer (over 26")heavy barrels will also droop under their own weight, more so as they heat up but they take longer to get hot. Heat will get you with the thin barrels but in a hunting situation your not shooting 10 round strings with sighters. I had a model 70 in 7mm Mag with a thin barrel and 3 shots was the limit after that you had to let it cool. It would put the first 3 shots just a tad over MOA, a fast follow up group would be 3 MOA. My 112 with a 26" does great but I've shot against guys with the 20" 10FPs that will hold their own. But I have to agree with BlueDot, a 18" 30-30 lever action is still my favorite brush gun.
It boils down to what you want to use it for. I use my 112 for a long range hunter and rifle matches but it is too heavy to carry all day and a pain in the brush. The model 70 was great to carry all day, kicked like a mule and useless in a match. The 30-30 was great in the brush, quick to point but not the most accurate.
