Christmas sounds pretty nice right now! I'm already bored with the heat and it's only June. What good is summer below 7000' elevation or 60 deg N. latitude?

North of 60 puts you in the NW territories, Yukon or Alaska. Gets pretty warm up there at times and the skeeters are 10 times worse

and the magnet variation tables do not work well above that latitude either !

The skeeters can be terrible. But the Brooks Range is the only place I found where 100% DEET didn't afford adequate protection. Meanwhile, the hottest day of the year in Fairbanks is extraordinarily comfortable and lovely. Even more so the North Slope.
I agree with the compass comment...Leave your magnetic compass home but don't forget your Garmin GPS.
All in all, you've convinced me it's more convenient to climb a mountain than head to the Arctic. I think I'll go hiking today.
