My New (less that 200 rounds) Marlin 917 in .17 HMR Caliber doesn't extract empty cases as it should. It has long been my habit to immediately extract the empty as soon as it fires and chamber another round. This rifle allows that only part of the time. This leaves the empty case chambered and creates a no feed problem. If it cools a bit then it will extract normally. I suspect that it has a rough chamber causing the problem. Could someone instruct me on polishing the chamber and the polishing compound to use. I don't have or know where to get a chamber cleaning brush for this caliber. I ask this question on the small game portion but no responses. Thanks for help.

All I know ain't all that much but I remember Jack O'Connor talking about this in Outdoor Life once. If I remember right he listed : excessive pressure, rough chamber, dirty chamber, and oversize chamber (yes, oversize) among other causes. His experience was that if a chamber is excessively large the cartridge case will expand past its "spring back" point and stay tight against the chamber walls. This sounded plausible and of course who knew these things better than Jack, especially when the subject was a problem that could screw up a hunt. Jack loved rifles but he used them to hunt with pretty much exclusively, so extraction problems were a higher priority to him than m.o.a. accuracy and such. Hey you guys.....read everything by Jack O'Oconnor you can get your mitts on if you haven't already. Jack was pretty much in a class by himself. Ed

Makes sense. I have thoroughly cleaned the chamber and the extractor appears to be ok. Immediatly after firing the case sticks but give it ten seconds to cool and it extracts normally. It seems to spring back as a slow rate. I agree that Jack O"Connor was a good writer and interesting to read. I think perhaps he was a bit over zealous concerning the .270. LOL
