Hi all,
I am really ignorant about this subject so please be patient.
I have a rem 700 in 220 swift, I am considering rebarreling it to 243 winchester.
My concern is, will the bolt fit both cases? do I need to get a new bolt? do I need to modify the existing bolt ?
Any info/ pointers would be appreciated !

Bubba is it shot out the reason you are changeing barrel? I am dumb when it comes to changeing parts on rifles. But should be some gunsmiths here on the forum that can answer.May be able to just rebore???

I would like to change calibers by changing barrel - the barrel has only 600rds on it, far from being shot out.
I figured that I could put some QR rings & bases on it, put a fluted barrel on it, and hunt deers and vermits with the same rifle.

I was going to tell you that I have a buddie that has a 22/250 that is shot out and what he does is set the bullet out farther. His is still shooting as good as my new savage varmit in 22/250. Sorry I couldn't help you more. I like the 243 I don't get around to hunting with it much because of other calibers to try out but I have killed more than a couple deer at over 300 yds with the 243. Let a buddie use it last year and he took his first long distant deer with it close to 300 yds.Cannot remember the exact yards think it was 270 ??

I think that 243 is a good caliber for deer and smaller game, right bullets utilized of course.
thanks for the ideas herman.

Bubba the case head on your 220 swift is .473 and the case head on the 243 Win is also .473. So no bolt modifications would be necessary BUT the 220 Swift has a more sloped case .402 at the shoulder compaired to .454 for the 243 Win in a slightly shorter case. The feed rails in your 220 might cause problems with the 243 round feeding from the magazine. Just me, but I would keep the Swift and get a SPS or the like for 500 or so in 243, guessing you will spend about the same on a good barrel, chambering and barrel fitting. As far as larger game with the Swift try Scirocco II Rifle Bullets by Swift the 75gr .224 should be death to a white tail and the 220 Swift has the power to make them go. MI will let you use a 220 Swift in the nothern parts so if you are up north then you should be golden. Start at around 42 gr of Reloader 22 and tweek up from there should get you in the 3600 fps ball park with 26" of runway (Barrel)

I think that because of the critical aspects of chambering and headspaceing it becomes the job for a properly equipped gunsmeith. Not a hugh job however. Af for as the decision of going to the .243 I feel that it is a super caliber. It has become my favorite combination deer/varmint cartridge and my confidence level with it is complete. One shot drop right there kills so far. Recoil is light enough to permit me to do my job accurately without need of pre shot precautions.

Wish I could use mine on deer here in NYS! It would be a real death dealer on Whitetails.
Until then the woodchucks will continue to pay the price at ranges that sometimes seem absurd.

I remember 30 years or so ago I would see woodchucks all over around here (N.E. lower, MI) now all I have to shoot at is white tails : ( and squirrels. I have a 22-250 Ackley that I love to shoot but have only shot one deer with it. A doe right between the headlights at 100 yards, what a mess. For the little critters a 40 gr Noslers are nothing less then spectacular.
