I have a laminated stock that has a greenish color that I am attempting to change. I have tried Brownell's wood bleach with no success on the bare wood. Are there any stains or dyes that would hide/cover the greenish tint? I would prefer to get a Savage laminate brown color or some brown or slight reddish tint. Any suggestions or suggestions at all in this regard? I am not sure how lets say a walnut stain now and the greenish cast will mix. I once tried to change the color of a Ruger laminate in a blonded color and that did not turn out very well. Ideas appreciated. Thanks jims

Good luck,, the company that makes all the laminate for gunstocks (Rutland Plywood) in the US (and just about the rest of the world) uses a pressurized dye/resin impregnation method on each veneer layer before it is glued and pressed into a laminate. You can try some stain to change it but from what I've seen others try you might have some luck with the brown and change the tint a bit but with the other colored woods like red, green and blues you end up with some real funky colors as you found out with the Ruger stock. About the best try would be to sand the stock and then hit it with a very dark stain to maybe tone down the green

One option is to give it a camo paint job. I have done some shotguns that turned out looking nice if you like camo patterens. I suspect that the colors you are dealing are not surface but throughout the depth of the laminate.

Thanks for the suggestions. I had thought about the paint but I am going to try stain first. If that doesn't work I can always paint, I just hate to do that on a wood stock if I can avoid it.

Just an update. Between the bleach, sanding and various dyes etc. I got a color I could live with. I have the first coat of poly on it already.

I can do stock work, I cannot post pictures. My daughter is able to do that for me, I will have to be quick, she is off to college soon.

Jims, you can learn to post pictures. I am 20 years your senior and found it difficult to post a picture. But it is just writing down the steps and then following them. U can learn to do it if you put that softwear between the ears to work and that pen and paper to follow steps.

Oh man. I surely hope this is NOT the "green" laminated Stock that Bill Ruger made for a year or two back in the mid 80's. If so, you have not only a very rare stock, but one of the most beautiful laminated woods every done as a 'stock' stock (pardon the pun).
If you are changing that, I'm gonna just fall in the floor and faint.
I'd have bought that stock from you in a heartbeat, and given you enough to buy a new Boyd's per your liking........
sigh.
