Went to the range today. Amongst other things I wanted to shoot my 243 over my chrony to see what the reloads I've been shooting for years did. Got velocities right around 3000 FPS, some slightly over and some slightly under. The spread was 16 FPS. I'm shooting 100 grain soft points over IMR 4350. I'm satisfied with that

RAF,
That's right in line with what you should be getting with those bullets. What's your twist and how do they shoot at 100 and beyond?

In my Savage Striker with 95 Nos PT and IMR 4350 I can only get around 2400 fps but that is out of a 12" barrel. Suppose to be 14" but the brake is 2". The fastest so far has been with H414 just over 2600 fps using a 95 grain bullet. mike

Wilmsmeyer, I have no idea what the twist is. The rifle is a savage 110E. The groups with this rifle are under MOA but not today. Winds today were 30 - 35 mph and it was hard to hold the rifle steady. That wasn't important to me today as I know the rifles shoots well. I wanted the Chrony the rounds and that was the sole purpose today.

RAF,
Although we can not use centerfires where I hunt, I occationally toy with big game bullets in my .243. I've shot 85 gr partitions, 95 gr NBT's, 100 gr partitions, 100 grain grand slams and 105 gr Speer BTSP's. Groups are OK at 100 yds with the heavier bullets but nothing as good as some of my woodchuck loads using the light 55 gr NBT at around 4000 fps.
My twist is 1:10 inches and I believe that from things I've read that a 1:9 twist is preferable for the heavier bullets. Gun is a 700 Rem with 26 inch bull barrel and laminated stock.
Anyway, I was just curious.

I can see where a 95 grain bullet would be adequate for deer. I was from the old school when I acquired this rifle where bigger is better. At first I thought 243 was a little small for deer and if I did use it the bigger the better when it came to bullets. Therefore I opted for the 100 grain bullet. I've shot several deer with it, including the biggest whitetail I ever shot. I've since changed my opinion. This rifle actually isn't mine. It belonged to my future son in law who didn't have a firearms licence and couldn't register it when the laws changed. He offered to sell it to me but told him to bring it to me and I would register it for him. When he did take the courses and get a licence I would transfer the registration back to him. In the mean time I bought a new scope for it, worked up and load for it. It shoots great. If and when he gets a licence, I'll give it to him and will be shopping for a new one for me

Just bought a special run savage 243 with ss fluted 22 in barrel it looks good and so far shoots really good.I am now trying to find a good load for the 105 a-maxes.Found one load yesterday that gave me 1 1/2 in group at 300 and allmost a one holer at 100. Shot my favorite hunt load yesterday to see what the speed was and got 3325 fps with 45 grs of H414 and a 85 gr sierra BTHP. The savage twist is 1;9.25 and the rem is 1;9 1/8,so it may be hard for me to get better grouping with the 105 a-maxes but have a few more powders to try.The a-max calls for 1:9 twist
