I am just starting to use a chronograph. Someone said you could set it on the end of the bench, add some weight on it so the muzzle blast did not blow it off and that was an easy way to set it up. It sure would be alot easier than putting my tripod out on uneven ground, measuring the distance from the barrel etc. Anyone ever try this and any reason not to do it this way? Also just shoot through the center of the screen then? Thanks

Jim, I have never used mine for centerfire but I would think the muzzle blast even weighted down would be hard on the chrony. All the guys at my range set them on a tripod about 10 feet away. With the MLII, I go out 18 feet to keep the sabot from interfering with readings.
I set the tripod height at the same height as the bench since my front rest is about 8 inches high and then line up the rifle with the target and then line up the center of the chrony with the rifle. The first couple attempts were aggravating but you get the hang of it. A laser bore sighter would maybe make lining up the chrony easier.

I would remove the breech plug and just sight thru the bore. Keep both eyes open and you will see where everything lines up. Rich De

IMO setting the Chrony on the end of the bench is not a good idea. Besides the muzzle blast you have to be concerned about the powder on you lenses.
