I have a Rem 700 vssf in 22-250. I have it topped with a Leupold VXIII 6.5x20 x 50. I am shooting 52gr sierra hpbt match bullets. Upon firing I lose my sight picture unlike my 223. I was wondering if adding a murcury recoil reducer in the stock would help with not losing site picture. Thanks

I think losing the sight picture is more usual than not losing it when using a scope. In my case I think part of it is reflex action to recoil. It could also be the eye relief of the scope being different. As you know even the same amount of recoil is felt differently depending on the shape of the stock, length of trigger pull and how the cheek is placed on the stock. Mercury recoil reducers are heavy and add weight which helps but I haven't been able to tell that they were anything close to what is claimed. One the other hand, I have noticed a considerable improvement when installing a SIMs recoil pad. It is just my opinions, but I feel that if you mounted the scope you now have on the 223 in exactly the same height and distance from the eye you would lose the sight picture in the 223 also. My comments are based on nothing more than my personaly experiences.

I've always pretty much lost the sight picture when shooting the .22-250, compared to my Tactical 20. Big difference in the recoil of 50-55gr bullets compared to 32gr bullets, huh? The .223 no doubt shoots those 52gr Sierra's a few hundred fps slower than the .22-250.
I use mercury recoil reducers in heavier shooting rifles, but not for the purpose of keeping the sight picture.....just reducing the recoil in the .25-06, 7mm WSM and 10MLII.
However, I have found that I can keep the sight picture in my Rem 788, .22-250 by using Hornady 40gr bullets and keeping the speed below 4000fps.
