I was at a range today. One fellow was shooting a .270 at about 2950 fps. He shot and the chronograph said 1550. He said that must be wrong. He then extracted the case and from about the shoulder forward the case was gone. He then noticed it was a .243 case. He had both ammo and guns at the bench and mistakenly put the wrong cartridge in. The gun was inspected with no apparent damage. He shot it later with good groups and speeds at or about 2950 fps. In hindsight I have had more than one gun at the range. The wrong combination could turn out quite badly.

I try to dedicate certain types of "ammo boxes" for specific guns and specific applications.

I shoot at the range with a system quite similar to when I reload. Only one rifle and one box of ammo out at a time, and never ever mix calibers of ammuniton in a box. When I reload I only ever W/O exception have only 1 each type of powder, primer and bullet out at a time.
I saw the same thing once before two.
