I found this nice buck in early Aug of last year.
I hunted this guy all thru archery. I missed 5 weeks of work........I figure he cost me about $10,000.
He never came within 250 yds of me.
I passed up at least 10-12 chances at 6 or 7 legal PA bucks (4 points on one side) while I waited.
On the first day of gun season I was on stand at 5 AM. At 8:30 I saw my first deer (he was a 6 point that walked under my stand and laid down 45 yds away. Then at 10 a doe came thru, picked him up along the way and they crossed the field and disappeared into the woods.
By 11 the wind started kicking up and the 10 inch tree I was in started rocking. I was about 30 ft up so by noon I was thinking about getting down before I got knocked down or fell............I couldn't bring myself to do it knowing that he was still around. At 1:30 2 shots rang out from up the valley I was watching over. As I sat up straight and gripped the gun tighter I saw him trotting up his escape route. He was closely followed by 5 doe and a decent 8 point. They disappeared into a cluster of grape vines and as I held the scope on the opposite side I saw the rack coming out........I clicked the safety off and tightened up on the trigger. Just as his chest came clear he lifted his head and it was the 8 point, they had switched places behind the vines. I let out a breath and watched as patiently as I could. Finely after what seemed like hours he passed through the opening. I put the crosshairs on him and when the tree swung to it's low point I squeezed off a shot like a ship shooting a cannon on a wavey sea.............I chambered another slug but I didn't need it as he dropped on the spot.
The shot was taken at 126 yds with a Savage bolt action slug gun shooting Hornady SST slugs. It took his lungs and heart and exitted the other side.
The two guys that took the shots over the hill soon appeared. They checked him for any other shots just to make sure they couldn't stake a claim on him........swore they hit him somewhere.....but no blood was to be found anywhere prior to where my slug exitted his right side.
They congradulated me and left me to my task of gutting and dragging him up the hill to the truck......Why is it always uphill
That was the end of my best and most memorable hunt to date.
Thanks for letting me share,
Kevin
