Is this a common sport out there? What do the dogs do when the squirrel falls to the ground? Retrieve? Attack?
I'm assuming that the goal is to get the squirrel to get on the shooters side of the tree.
Nice dogs...looks like they have fun!

It is fairly common.A lot of people enjoy hunting with dogs and training them. I have been doing it for the better part of 25 years. The dogs tree, you shoot it out(when in season )and the dogs chew on a little bit for their reward, then the move on to tree another one.The pace can fast and furious! Awesome way to spend a fall or winter afternoon!

Many breeds are used for squirrel hunting. I have seee a few coonhounds that were excellent squirrel dogs. The best I ever entered the woods with was a cross between a German Shepherd and a Black and Tan Coonhound. Normally there are two hunters and when the dog or dogs tree one hunter walks to the opposite side of the tree hoping to get the squirrrel to move to the shooters side. Sometime shaking a bush or pulling a grapevine is needed to get a squirrel to show itself. It is not just shoot and waste meat. Squirrel fixed right is a great meal. Mountain Cur dogs are recently the breed preferred. I sure miss those long afternoon in the woods squirrel hunting with a top dog.

The photos in the original post are gone, but that isn't the case with memories of a squirrel dog of my youth. A friend had a mixed breed dog that loved to squirrel hunt. She'd run after and tree them then set down and watch them in the tree. We would finally catch up and look to see where she was focused to find the treed squirrel. As mentioned previously, either my friend or I would circle the tree and the squirrel would move to avoid detection by the person who was moving, offering a shot to the stationary hunter. This thread brings back fond memories of some of my earliest hunting excursions. Thanks for reminding me!
