I finally got the bowhunter's forum created and hope we can learn something from one another about the age old sport of hunting with the bow and arrow. So don't be bashful and come on in! ;D

Cool! I am a bowhunter trying to learn this flintlock thing. I have carried a bow since I was a little boy, and I bowhunt all over the country. I returned to traditional archery several years ago, and I love the simplicty and beauty of the older style bows.

Dan, I respect anyone who uses a traditional bow. I however use a Buckmaster compound since I have a hard time holding a traditional bow at full draw.

I love bowhunting, there is nothing like being in the woods in the Fall. We have a very liberal bag limit ( unlimited does ) and over the past 20 years I have shot more than my share. I now watch more than I shoot, I used to think that if I didn't get a shot that the day was a bust, now KNOWING that I could take the shot is almost the same, and very satisfying.
I use a compound bow, release, peep sight, etc. I try to practice at 50-80 yards, not that I would shoot more than 1/2 of that, it just makes the 25 yard shot something that I could do in my sleep.

Great to see Doug you got the Bowhunter's Forum up and running this week!
I used to do alot of bowhuntin for years but for last 2 years had to put it on back burner due to PA's new ML Season overlap plus Fall flounder and extended turkey seasons taken up too much time. We have a late Flintlock/Archery Season but then I'm carrin my flinter. Man, if only i could retire. ;D
I have a PSE Fire Flite 70 lb and shoot XX75 2315's and for huntin had very good luck with the 125 Thunderheads. Like the Winn Free release. Still do backyard shootin and cant wait to get out there again.

Well I love to collect old Bear recurves and long bows, but I hunt with a compound. I shoot with fingers, XX2117's, Zwickey broadheads and I do have sight pins on the bow but that is it. My hunting bows are a pair of old Oregon bows set at 64lbs. I tried a release once and I have just been a finger shooter to long. I kept wanting to let go of the whole thing. Then I thought, heck I shoot fingers good and they are always with me, I might as well keep using them. The new bows give me allot of trouble too. I like a bow 40" or longer for finger pinch and I like no more than 60-65% let-off. I like the bow to rip the string from my fingers when I relax those muscles. High let-off bows cause me to "pluck' the string. Old habits are hard to break and then I think "why break them, they work". If I need to, I will go back to a recurve, if no one makes a bow I can use when I am looking for a new one. I have taken my share of deer, bear, ground hogs, squirrels and even doves with this set up. So it is hard to want to change.

Your like me Dave, I'm not sure about some of these 80% let off bows. Not sayin I will never get one but my 60% PSE Fire Flite is pretty nice to shoot. I used to only shoot fingers and tried alot of releases I never could get used to until I got a Win Free Free Flight. Its is the best thing I ever did to improve my shootin. It seems like it becomes a natural extension of your hand. My cousin who shoots competition and bowhunts all over the country put me on to the Winn Free. I see they still make them and found this pic at Cabela's: www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/content/Pod/00/46/44/p004644sq02.jpg [/img]

I have shot competition(not much) and have done it with fingers. A friend of mine does also. We both talked about a release. But, in our stubborn old ways just figured we have never dropped our fingers out of the tree stand or left them in the truck or at home and have done very well hunting with what we got. Of course my buddy shoots ALLOT of competition and usually beats most of not all the other competitors with just his fingers. Now he is more than dedicated to the bow and has been hunting with one since the early 60's. When we shoot together at the local range for either animal shoots ro spot shoots we usually shoot real close to the same score, but he always edges me out a little.

Started Bow Hunting such a long time ago, at such time only wooden arrows were legal, Hunted with everything from a long bow to recurves, then to compounds. Now I have this dang arthiritis. Now I can't hold a bow at full draw so now I use a Crossbow. In Maryland anyone who reaches the age of 65 can use a crossbow whether disabled or not. Everyone says crossbows are cheating, sure crossbows are very acurate, but one still has to know ones yardage. Another drawback to crossbows is trying to cock it in a tree stand without the deer seeing you, I still wish I could still use a compound bow, But even with the 80% letoff it's difficult for me. So I still love the sport so I deal with it. And in relation to shooting deer, I have shot my share. now I really enjoy watching them, I say I'm going to get one today then when I see them coming I just watch and say to myself, self, if I shoot. then comes the gutting dragging etc, so they slowly walk by ;D Hey this a great sight, we can exchange tactics and experience and how too, when it comes to deer hunting, scrapes, rubs, setting up, and mistakes that I am sure we all have done at one time or another ;D I shot an arrow in the air where it lands I know not where, But I have more arrows. Thats a great rule MD has there for the crossbow! I wish PA would adopt the same since now they only allow crossbows for the disabled hunters durin the regular bow season. We have recently adopted a special early antlerless hunt for the SR & JR Hunters though which is a move in the right direction.

Hello Doug, and everyone else on board. New kid on the block here- ab in MD. Great new forum. Love bowhunting, hunting with Darton Maverick Express 62#. Hey Loggy, also use a Winn Free Flight release, only difference is mine has a single hook that stays locked until you squeeze the trigger. Sure helps with the draw and release. Good hunting everyone, the season is just around the corner. AB.

AB welcome on board! See you are from MD. I'm about 20 min north of you in PA.
Yeah, mine is the single hook also. The new ones are the caliper style. Mine is about 5 or more years old and still going strong. I have replaced the wrist strap once.

Greetings all. A little background here on my activities. Started in the late '60s with trad equipment. That is all that was available. Now 30+ years later, I am again moving in that direction. In the early '80s ML grabbed my attention and I did nothing else for 15 years. Monthly BP matches and hunting was done with a ML. 8 years ago, I bought a compound and started back with archery. Last 6 years, all my hunting has been with the bow. Still shoot ML in competition but haven't killed a deer with one for some time. Now I am working with a longbow and thinking about a new recurve. Hope to be able to maybe take a pig with one this year. However, the compound will be my choice for deer hunting for some time. Nothing like being close and personal when taking the shot. That is if I do shoot. I usually prefer to just video what I see. When the trigger is pulled, the work begins. Glad to have this forum to visit and share with others who have similiar thoughts and ideas. Ed
