Just wondering what the maximum range would be for an arrow to be effective on a deer. I personally won't shoot at anything much over 30 yds because I not confident of my skill to make a good shot past that. I was just wondering that if someone could hit their target at greater ranges what would be the max.

Actually depending on your poundage, weight of arrow and type of broadhead, I am sure it is much further than many can shoot accurately. Since the archer is relying on hemmorage to down his game, as long as you get good penetration to the vitals, it will work. The key is accurately doing that. Just like on a box of 22's, they will say they have a range of 1 1/4 mile. I wouldn't want to take a chance at even that range of being hit. My furtherest shot on a deer was 40yds. It was a pass through. I shoot a slow but heavy rig. My FPS is 220, the weight of the broadhead/arrow combination is 610gr. My broadhead is a Zwickey, cut on contact type of broadhead.

My bow is set at between 55 and 60 lbs. I'm shooting carbon arrows with 125 gr mechanical broadheads. My permanent bow stand is set up so that 30 is the max range. After that too much brush. I have shot 3 at 30 yds. I've shot targets at 40 but shooting targets is different that deer. I'm probably not comfortable shooting farther than 30 so won't. There are lots of deer so if I pass on one there'll be another along shortly. I think my rig shoots in the area of 290 FPS and wondering how far they could be and the arrow still penetrate to the vitals.

To me maximum range is the furtherest distance I'm comfortable shooting and still hit my target. That being said the longest shot Ive taken and killed is about 35 yds. i practice out to 50yds. i once shot at a doe in a picked corn field @ 50 yds and she jumped the string in reverse and the arrow flew right by her head as she turned. i shoot a 70 lb Mathews with carbon arrows and spitfire boardheads @ 283 fps. mike

With my top pin, I hit the top of the 9 Inch Circle at 10 yards, and the bottom of the 9 Inch Circle at 35 yards. Strangely, this is almost exactly the with my backyard. Go figure. I have three pins, and I can practice out to 45 yards. But I am using a Bear White Tail II, without a fast flight string, aluminum arrows, and Bear razor heads. My tackle's old, but lethal. And it doesn't cut down on my effective range.

Bows are like guns. "It isn't the bow you shoot, it is how you shoot the bow you shoot".

it comes down to practice, practice, practice, and you have to be confident and comfortable with your bow, i practice at 60 yards, but the furthest shot i have taken is 37 yards and it was a good clean kill shot. when a live target is more than 40 yards out, it can move a lot before the arrow gets there!
