Yup: that is what you do, wrap it well in a couple of plastic bags, and freeze it. Do not forget about it and leave it in the freezer for an extended period of time. it will freezer burn no matter how well you wrap it. And it is almost impossible to properly skin a freezer burned tail.

Another option would be take it to your taxidermist while it's still warm, and let them do what they prefer. Animals that are not even stiff yet are always easier to skin, and some taxidermis will make the time to skin it out if they have the option to do so while it's still warm.
I have 3 white squirrels with fox squirrel tails running around at my parents farm. I'm going to shoot them and get them mounted one of these days.

Funny I should see this post. I was Deer hunting yesterday and for the first time in my life I saw a Black Squirrel, I have never seen it in all the previous years of hunting this stand. I have watched greys eating at my corn pile, however never seen this one. He looked to be normal size. I wonder could he be a transit as I have heard squirrels migrate. ;D Lou

It is more likely that he is related to the other gray squirrels in the area. A black squirrel is a gray squirrel with a black gene. even in populations that have never been known to have black members. the occasional outcrop appears. now that one has. you will begin to see more of them in the area. as the outcrop member contributes to the gene pool. watch over the next several years, providing nothing removes the black from the pool before breeding season. you will see an increase of black squirrels in your area.

Lou,
That's weird, the same thing happened to me on the Eastern Shore two years ago. I had been deer hunting this area in Snow Hill for several years and one day I see this coal black squirrel. Never have seen one in all my years hunting till then. A friend has a pair of white squirrels he shot somewhere in Frederick County.

Gentlmen, I have seen a white squirrel a friend of mine shot, I have never seen one alive. Years ago when It was legal to shoot Delmarva Fox Squirrels In Dorchester county I have guys in our hunting group that have killed and mounted both black and white in that species, but now they are federally protected. I have seen many black squirrels... but they're all over the place up here so go figure. I was out in my backyard today shooting my bow, coulda shot a grey squirrel off the fence, lol. Didn't though, considering the arrow would end up in my neighbours back door or something.
