Hi everyone,
I'm not a taxidermist but I figured this would be the best place to ask. I live in PA and am going to Colorado for a three week hunt. If I get a trophy elk or mule deer what should I do with the cape and skull? I'd like to have my taxidermist do the mount for me.
I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet.
Thanks, Kevin

I'm no expert but I'll share my experience with you , the first thing to do is take plenty of pictures of the beast (I'm sure that won't be a problem) paying attention to the head. Next some measurements from the tip of the nose to the corner of the eye, circumference at the base of the skull and midway around the neck will be necessary for the taxidermist to order the proper size form. After the cape is removed from the skull the best thing to do is freeze the skin if possible and keep it frozen for the taxidermist. If freezing is not an option then remove as much flesh from the cape ( without damaging it ) and apply plenty of salt to the flesh side of the hide , and all fleshy areas of the nose lips eyes and ears. Roll it up and keep it in a burlap or other breathable sack, avoid plastic. As far as the skull , you can try removing as much of the flesh as possible. Good luck , I hope you get an opportunity to try this method out.
