Jeannie called e last night to inform me that it would be in my best interest to select another foal. The appaloosa was injured either Friday nigth or Saturday morning. One of the other foals stepped on him and caused his umbilical cord to open up causing a condition called Patent Urachus.
After consulting 2 vets locally, both concur that this foal should not be adopted until such time as he has healed. So I will be selecting another foal. I've got my choices "DOWN" to 6 on their page. I'll most likely wait till I get there and look at them personally to determine which one I will be bringing home. Still planning on taking 2 cameras to get pictures. So everyone be patient and I will post pictures when I can.

I'm very glad to hear that you consulted your local Vets in this matter. Patent Urachus is a serious situation. I know they said it was caused by an injury, but that is a new one on me. Like I said in my PM, it is usually caused by an infection. It takes a full regiment of antibiotics, sometimes two, to get a grasp on the situation. Sometimes, it also requires surgery. That area seals off and forms the bladder. Leaking urine just causes more infection of the area.
You did good! ;D

Well I'm heartbroken over that foal as even though I hadn't brought him home yet, I have grown to be quite attached to him. They are sending him to one of their babysitters who can give him more direct supervision as they don't have 20 other foals hanging around in the barn. I only hope he gets better.
