Well I got my first turkey today not bad for a 63 yearold. Not too many turkeys here though. It was a beautiful day and one year today since my Dad passed away. I went to grab a camo jacket and his coat was in the closet so I put it on and said well pop you gonna give me a little luck? So I went back on my oak ridge did a little calling sounded like the neighbors guienie (spell)hens I am new at this. Poked around for a couple of hours and was heading back to the house when I decided to walk over to my Dad's memorial on his pond were He hunted ducks. There out in the field were a pile of turkeys. I tried to sneak around but a hen saw me and they ran into the high prairie grass behind Dad's Pond. Well thats that ,I thought so I just walked over to the memorial and there were turkey's all around me. I quickly picked out a nice Tom and shot him I was using a Spanish double Definetly not a turkey gun. Rookie's luck or? Redclub

Redclub It could be luck, or perhaps you had some help Either way it does make for a great start to Turkey hunting, and a good story too. edge.

Congrats on your bird. I've taken my dad's old 30-06 pump(bought in 1941)hunting at least day a year for the last 9 years.Killed 5 deer with it since he's been gone.

Redclub Congrats on your first bird. The first of any game animal that you hunt and harvest will always have a special remembrance, it has for me. Just 63 young and no longer a rookie you say. ;D Ed Theiss

Redclub, you can make a fan mount pretty easily. Just get as much of the meat off of the base of the tail fan as you can. That is the hardest part but after a little scraping and cutting you will be able to get it pretty clean.Spread the fan out on a peice of plywood using small brad nails or staples to hold the fan open. Pour Borax over the meaty part making sure to cover it completely. Sprinkle some Borax on the feathers. Place something heavy and flat on top of it to keep the feathers from curling up and let it sit for a few weeks. When it cures you can make a wood plaque to mount it on. I normally put my beards in a box of borax until they are cured also. Did you cut off the spurs?
