I am going to use a new gobbler getter during this spring hunt which opens April 7th this year. I ordered a Mossberg 500 that is coming with the synthetic stock and I have a Merrit Red Dot sight to mount on it. I plan on taking it to my range soon and try both sixs and fours and test out two or three choke tubes. It comes with three and I will buy a turkey choke for it. I am aware that most use a 12 and some a ten but I am hoping that this 20 does as well as one I used last year that does not have the receiver drilled and tapped for a scope. I selected the twenty because of a little less recoil and hopefully I can get my targets to within 35 yards or less. Finding the brand and size shot plus the choke that the new gun likes best will be interesting for me. I will see how it patterns at 20, 25, 30, and 40 yards. I usually put one or two decoys at 20 yards and use that as a marker to estimate ranges. I have to hunt from a blind due to age and COPD but this does not destroy the eagerness and the anticipation that is building by buying and getting ready. Being retired gives me all the time I need to enjoy life and hunting.

My mother also has COPD and turkey hunts a bit. She uses a 20ga., Mossberg 500 youth model, fixed full choke barrel, and a reload that I worked up specificaly for turkey hunting with that gun. @ 30 yards that bird is gonna be dead as long as she does her part. I find that with my longer arms this shotgun/reload kicks just as bad as most 12 ga turkey loads, but since the short stock fits her much better the recoil is no way near as abusive. At the range 35 yards I can put 5 pelets in the kill zone and several more in the fleshy area of the neck.

I hunted last year with a 20 ga Mossberg 500. I didn't get a chance to take a bird with it, but it did pattern well out to 35 yards with Remington Hevi Shot #5s. I purchased the HS turkey tube for Hevi Shot, and it did shoot better than the standard full choke that came with the gun.
Just my 2 bits, Mark

It did it right. 40 measured yards, No. 4, 3" factory shell with 1 1/4 Oz shot. weighed 22 Lbs. 10 " Beard and 1" Spurs. I thought it was 35 yards but went back with a range finder and measured the distance at 40. Taking it created a memory to go into my memory storage area.
