I hunt with a 20 Gauge using No. 4 shot that patterns well. I might happen to kill a turkery at 50 or 60 yards but that isn't close to a certainty. I have patterened my gun at our range and although it usually put from 10 to fifteen shot in the an area the size of a turkeys head and neck at 40 yards I have determined that anything beyond 35 yards is a no shoot situation. I use a Merritt red dot scope so I can take accurate aim. I have to hunt from a blind and with my range finder it is easy to put out pieces of survey tape at my personal maximum range. I put my decoys (usually two) about the midway range point. I like the idea of knowing for certain that the bird will be taken cleanly and that a second shot will not be needed. I am curious to know if others have a personal maximum range. Naturally a 10 or 12 gauge would extend this range a few yards but even with a 12 my maximum would be 40 yards. Some hunters in my area uses No. 2s and aim at the body. I suppose it is whatever is legal and melts your butter. Your views??

I always pattern my guns in the spring and usually go out to 40-50 yards to try different chokes and loads, this is the best for distance, a range finder always works well in the field and I suggest bringing one with you both at the range and in the field.
