Shooting Winchester Double X Supreme 2.25oz by 3.5 inch #5's.
Consistently 20 pellets in the kill zone at 50yards. I never plan to shoot a bird at that distance but I remember 2 days I wish I would have had it.

I have found through a great deel of patterning my turkey gun that for me to realize its fullest potential, I would have to put a scope on it, but I am not that crazy about doing so, so I stayed with the excellent fiber optic iron sights I put on my gun.
The killing power and range of the new Winchester Supreme Xtended Range Turkey Loads has to be experienced first hand to be beleived. I have shot over 70+ of them a varring yardages while testing, evaluating and sighting in and brother thay deliver as advertized and then some. I sure as h*ll hope I am never on the receiving end of them, as I strongly doubt my chances for survival.

Those are great comments reccommending the Winchester double x supremes. I am guessing the Xtended range turkey load is the same. I personally don't think that 50 yards is beyond the killing range provided the gun is scoped and patterened to put the scope crosshairs in the center of the group. This assumes that the best choke is used. I use a 20 ga. and I don't believe that Winchester makes that load for the 20. However, I use No. 4s, a scope and with the choke I use a turkey has no chance at 40 yards. As you probably know the 20 shoots as hard as a 16, 12 or 10 Ga. but has less pellets of equal size. Hope Winchester offers the Xtended Turkey Load in the 20 Ga. soon.

You very well may have a few pellets in the right area....but I'm not so sure you have enough energy in #5s way out at 50 yards. It might work.....But it might not. Once that bird has been shot at or is crippled...he's as good as removed from the flock. You'll probably not hear from him again. Better to come back another day and work him again to get him in closer for a more sure kill, not to mention another "FUN" hunt. Turkey hunting is more about getting them in close...watching them do their little dance...then shootin' 'em. It's hard to beat that kinda fun.

Not only do 5s have enough energy at that distance they have it at much further. 6s have more than enough energy at 50 yards to slam a tom. I've never(knock on wood) had a tom get away when I smacked him at 50 yards with #6s and I've taken several at that range. Matter of fact, #6s flat out hammer them at that range. Range has way more to do with pattern density and uniformity than shot size when your talking greater than #6.
Most folks that say a certain size shot is not big enough is pure BS and was started by a rumor they heard or by a shot they made with a terrible patterning load or misplaced shot.....
Refer to the shot size thread for the last one I tagged at that range Friday morn with wimpy ole #6s.
Good Luck

I use those same shells in #4's. It doesn't take many pellets to put a turkey down.
