I just received the phone call of my life. Seems like an old family friend has had a windfall and she wants to send her "boys" on a hunting trip to Alaska. The only catch is she knows nothing about setting something like this up. She asked me to take care of it, but only if she could send me with them. Needless to say I am still in shock at the kindness and generosity of this all. Of course I agreed to set it up and do all the research and leg work, but I am still undecided on accepting such a kind offer. I am sure most will understand, not wanting to take advantage, but at the same time understanding the principles of grace at work here. Anyway, does anyone have any experience hunting in Alaska, recommendations on guides/outfitters,tips -hints, etc? Thank you,Rifleman

I was able to meet and speak with Steve White (not the same SW as our SW from Arkansas ) of Willow Air Service from Alaska today at the Indy Boat Sport and Travel show. He is not a guide but he does fly-in hunts in Alaska. He seemed like a real class act, and was very helpful and knowledgeable about hunting Alaska. He got me started rethinking how I was gonna do this hunt, allthough he did not seem to me he was trying to sell me on unguided hunts at all. More like he was just explaining options. Anyway he seemed like a good guy to do business with. Was just wondering if anyone here could provide a reference on him and his air service. Thanks Rman

The best advise I can give you is if you are going to go guided ask for as many references as any outfitter will give you. Especially from clients that were not successful. Choosing an outfitter is where word of mouth is God. I strongly recommend you spend some time st these websites asking this same question in their Alaska or big game forums. www.monstermullies.comwww.huntamerica.comwwwjesseyshuntingpage.com I would also strongly advise you to do a net search for any websites for hunting in Alaska as i know they exist as I have been to a few, but sorry I don't have their address. I feel compelled to give you a little advise. There are going to be few if any times in your life when it comes to dealing with friends, were your neck will be farther in the noose, or your n*ts deeper in the door jamb than now that you have been tasked with setting up what is most likely to become a quite expensive hunting trip. If all turns out well you will be a hero for life, BUT if all gos wrong and the trip sucks, even if you did your best and had absolutely nothing what so ever to do with it and things that went wrong were totally out of your control, you bore the brunt of much ill will for a looooong time after. Your name will be synonymous with loathing. So I advise you research this as completely as is humanly passable. This 10x as true if you decide to go DIY instead of guided. Outfitters and guide services are just like auto mechanics, for every honest top shelf operation you find, there are ten more just looking to take your money and give you a serious rectal exam, without the benefit of lubrication first. I truly wish you the best of luck, because you are going to need it.
