I really didn't get a chance to sight in the Slug gun very well last year, and with deer season just around the corner I worked the last 2 weekends on it. I wanted to see what slugs it liked, so I bought a box of every sabot slug that I could get my hands on in 2 3/4" length. 3" shells haven't worked for me in the past with other slug guns, so I decided to give my shoulder a break and not test them. There are no SST's to be found anywhere, so they will have to wait until next year for testing.
All testing was done at 50 Yds, from a solid rest. One shot was fired into the backstop to foul the barrel with each type of slug to prep the barrel for the 3 shot group test.
all measurements were taken center to center
Lightfield EXP's 3/4" wide x 1 1/4" high
Win Platinum Tip 1 1/4"w x 7/8"h
Win Supreme Sabots 2"w x 1 1/4"h
Remington Core-Lokt Sabot 2"w x 1 1/2"h
Rem Copper Solid Sabot 2 3/8"w x 1"h
Federal w/Barnes Expander 1 oz. 1"w x 5/8"h
I didn't shoot the Win w/BRI sabot - I've had good luck accuracy wise with them, but they don't expand at all.
The Federal with the Barnes Expander bullet looked the most promising, so I purchased 2 boxes of the 1 oz bullet, and 2 boxes of the 3/4 oz variety. I had to re-try the 1 oz because the box that I tried last weekend was a couple of years old and I didn't know if they changed any. This weekend, I didn't shoot any into the backstop, I went right for the target with a cold gun.
Federal w/Barnes Expander 1 oz.
First shot from a cold gun was a bit to the left, 2nd shot was 1/2" to the right and 3/8" down from the first shot, 3rd shot was 1/4" below 2nd shot.
Group size 1/2" w x 5/8" h
Next was the Federal w/Barnes Expander 3/4 oz.
First shot had roughly a 2" higher point of impact than the 1 oz. slugs. 2nd shot opened up the 1st hole by .1" to the right, 3rd shot was 1/2" low.
Group size .1"w x .5"h.
Next weekend (or this week if the weather is nice) I'll move the target out to 100 Yds. and shoot two 3 shot groups waiting a good 1/2 hr. between shots.
Finally, a slug gun that can shoot!
