About 5 years ago I aquired a Rem 1100, 3 inch mag with a full choke 30 inch ribbed barrel. It's in mint condition with beautiful wood. I did not shoot it until today, at a trap shoot at the gun club where I shoot.
Could anyone tell me how old it is if I supplied the serial #?. I think Remington started making them in the early sixties.
By the way, it would not eject trap loads so I assume I need a weaker spring if I choose to use it as such.

The back of the Blue Book of Gun Values should have a listing of serial numbers by year. If you haven't found out yet, PM me the serial # and I'll look it up.
A weaker spring won't solve the problem with the trap loads, its due to having only 1 gas port in the barrel to work the action. The 3" loads, having more oomph so to speak, have enough gas flowing thru the one port to work the action. Trap barrels usually have 2 ports. If the barrel had 2 ports, the action would be damaged if you did a lot of hunting with heavy shells.
I purchased a Stan Baker "Big Bore" barrel for my 1100 a while back and had the opposite problem. It had two holes for shooting factory trap loads, and I ended up breaking the link due to the violent rearward motion from heavy 3" loads. Here's what I did: I measured the single hole in my factory 3" 1100 barrel, and measured the double holes in the Baker Big Bore barrel. Then I updrilled the ports, and threaded them. Then I inserted a set screw in one hole, and in the other set screw, I drilled a hole the same dia. as was in the factory 3" barrel. I took two more set screws and drilled holes in them to duplicate the dual ports for trap loads. To switch from trap loads to hunting loads, I unscrew the set screws and swap them out. You could do the same with your barrel, or just find a trap barrel and measure the holes in it, and duplicate the holes in your 3" barrel. But, I'd go the set screw route if I was going to shoot any hunting loads in it too.....

wilmsmeyer:
I might have led you astray.... Does it have screw-in choke tubes? If so, then it's from the mid 80's. If not, then I stand by my pm. The Vent Rib became standard in 1984 on the 1100 Magnum duck gun, but choke tubes didn't start 'till 1987. This model was discontinued in 1988. The regular 1100 was made from 1963 to 1988, VR became standard in 1985. Screw in choke tubes were a $40.00 option in 1986. The VR could have been added by a previous owner or maybe as an option from the factory on the earlier guns.
