A gauge in early shotguns represented the number of round balls of lead of that size equaled a pound. Example: If 12 equal sized balls of lead would weigh 1 pound that gun would be classified as a 12 gauge. My question is: Does this still hold true basically and if so then would the diameter of a 10 gauge be double that of a 20 gauge? I don't think the answer will heal the sick or raise the dead but I am curious if this old method of measurement is even known today by most shotgunners.

"No" as the diameter goes up the volume increases at a much faster rate.
