Rifleman, I would like for you to clarify something if you don't mind. You said that handguns wouldn't be allowed at the Indiana shoot. Does this apply to BP Handguns? I have a couple of Ruger Old Armies and thought I might bring them if I get to attend, if that is permitted by you. Pocampo

Rifleman, are you speaking about hunting handguns or what? I think revolvers in some calibers would be OK to hunt with while others would be a bit light to hunt anything but small game. I have never been a big fan of hunting with a sidearm of any kind, but if you guys would like a forum to talk handgun hunting it would be fine by me. Just let me know the particulars. ;D

Well let me know if you do. Maybe something like a "Sniper Forum". If that is the case and the first question would be "what is your favorite sniper rig"? It would be a custom gun with a heavy match barrel a trigger set for two ounces a tactical scope and in 30-06. ;D ;D

Doug that would be one mean dude for sure. I did talk with GYSGT Carlos Hathcock USMC one time and showed him my then new Rem 700 SS syn 30-06. He looked it over, said "nice rifle, why didn't you buy a .308? " What could I say,to the number one sniper in the world? LOL Well if he was still around he would be glad to see that I now still own 1 30-06, but now also own 3 .308's

The 308 is a fine rifle, but it won't handle the heavier bullets or carry all the way to 1,500 yards like the 06 will. I have seen the 308 shot by several "professional" shooters and it simply won't go to 1,500 yards with any accuracy. The 30-06 will.

Now your talking my game!
Actually, that 30/06 taint' much of a 1500 yarder either.....When your talking in excess of 1,000 yards, you need to step up to magnum size cases or larger, then necked to .30. One of the most popular 1,000 yard .30 cal cartridge is the 300 Ackley. Basically a 300 Weatherby magnum with the rounded shoulder flattened and improved to 40* and some of the body taper removed. That being said, many .30 cal shooters are switching to the 6.5 x 284 as there is a large availability of good high BC bullets available. With the BC's of these 140 gr. 6.5's running neck and neck with the 210 gr. .30's, who needs the extra recoil? Higher cost per bullet and some 25 gr. more powder! This past Saturday I won my relay (against 12 other shooters) with my 6.5 x 284 imp. . I shot a 7" ten shot group and the closest competitor was at 12" and others up to 20". That included the .30's. If you catch the wrong or switching wind condition, it don't matter what your shooting, you are going to get blown big time. I just happened to have a little luck on my side. In the final shootoff against 5 other relay winners, I shot 10" and lost to a 7" group??? Fece' Occur! ;D But yes, the .308 does not have enough boiler room capacity to shoot the 190 gr. and above bullets super sonic at 1,000 yards. And while the 06' can, it is still marginal and no one but no one uses them in 1,000 yd. BR. Richard
