Lots of controversy over guns in the cockpit since 9/11/01 yet I have yet to hear one single person express the use of bean bag rounds as a primary armament for not only pilots but air marshalls too.
Case point, a 1.5 ounce bean bag (shot filled cotton duck bag) loaded into a 12 ga hull with a light charge. It'll never bust a hole in the exterior of a plane and I seriously doubt it would even take out a window unless there was a problem with it to begin with.
Little plastic flare gun deal that fire 12ga flares would be perfect for bean bag rounds. I know from first hand experience that no matter how tough you think you are, those bag hurt like all &%$#@ and will put you down....this despite the fact that I had a couple rags wrapped around my thigh in anticipation of the impact (done under test conditions not running from the law). Black and blue from above the knee to the top of the hip and it was sore for a couple weeks. Definitely not a fatal shot there but if it hurt that &%$#in bad on my padded leg, I can just imagine how painful it would have been to the chest or back. Clearly a head shot would probably be fatal at close enough range, like in a jetliner. More than likely it'd break arms and definitely ribs at close range too yet the collateral damage is next to nothing unless you miss your target completely and then you run the risk of a bystander getting waffled. By any means I still think these would be far safer to both plane and passengers than an other ammo.
Even if you could not score a head shot on a hijacker, a body shot would provide enough delay to either load another round or allow the passengers to beat the snot outta him. Pistol with a big hole!
BTW, if any of you doubt how bad these round hurt, take a 2 pound ball peen and hit your leg with it on a full out swing and see how it feels and you'll be close to experiencing it.
