This new S&W revolver is very interesting. I am no fan of the really big revolvers as the 44 mag is all I ever needed, accurate, affordable to shoot and tolerable recoil. However this new 460 xvr shoots a 200 gr at 2330 fps. That is awesome ! With a good scope this would be a fantastic deer gun if one could shoot it well. I appreciate someone on the savage board bringing it to my attention. I do wonder though how they can get that much velocity out of that short a barrel. I assume it must have a very high chamber pressure. I would appreciate any comments or insight anyone might share. I think that you should go shoot someones (like sized) 454 casull, and then think about it if you want to shoot 'more' than that might even make a jarhead say uncle ! -bubba

I have shot the 445 dan wesson, it was not too bad recoil wise but the gun itself ,I did not like. Smith says this new revolver has remarkably low recoil, Whut?

further reading indicated that the 454 and 45 colt could alos be shot it in......... that makes it somewhat more attractive. but not the price tag

I have a 460 Mag and I have also owned 3 other 460 Mags. I have shot them uncomped with not much if any noticeable difference in recoil, but what I notice is, less muzzle flash without the comp. I also have a 4 inch S&W 500 Mag that I had a end cap made for it so it is not comped either. I do not notice any increase in recoil from when I install the comp back in. I have shot from 275 gr Barnes X bullets to 700 gr. hard cast bullets out of it. All I can say is I love the 460 and 500 Mags.

I love mine... It is everything Smith says it is and then some. Accurate! Only problem is the muzzle blast. The recoil is not the problem. Don't fire in close quarters and don't forget hearing protection. You will need it. No deer walks away from this monster....

Rman, there was a write up in Shooting Times this summer, maybe the May or June issue. The accuracy at 200yds was unbelievable, it employs gain twist rifling to help stabilize the bullet at that speed. The 200SST was the most accurate. If I can find the magazine I will get more details.

There is not doubt the 460 Mag is very accurate. I can consistently hit 4 inch clay targets at 150 yards with my 300 gr. hard cast bullets. All of the 460 I owned were tack drivers.

I have shoot very good groups with the 200 gr. SST up to 75 yards. My scope won't allow much more. (2X Leupold) There is a member of my gun club that made a kill on a nice buck at 150 yards with a 4X scope. The Cor-Bon 175 gr. and the Federal 175 gr. Barnes XPB spitzer bullets have also yielded good groups to 75 yards. My 460 is for close range shots (10-40 yards) My 10 ML-II will take anything outside that range.

Gain twist rifling is not new. It was used in some of the upper end rifles in the '60's Smith & Wesson has made a handgun that shoots like a rifle. (If you can hold it steady)

Gain Twist was used as far back as the sidelock era in flint and percurssion firearms.

goldwinginggunner, my S&W460 Mag has a 2X6X32 Bushnell scope on it. 150 yards is not a problem at all.
