I've become interested in loading ammo for deer hunting with a Ruger Blackhawk .45 Colt. Currently, I have a box of .451 230gr XTP's (left over from ML hunting) and five different powders to get me started. I have been asking several people what a good load would be........there seems to be some very hot, HOT shooters out there. For instance, a guy at a local gun shop told me today that he loads 27gr N-110 behind a 250gr bullet. That's hotter than loads I've seen for the .44 Mag!! The powders I have are IMR4227, Bullseye, 2400, SR4759 and N110. Any ideas for an impressive (but safe) load with any of these powders with a 230gr bullet? Primer? COL? Thanks!

danno have had no exp withit but have heard good things about n110 for pistols. i would go get a hornady reloading book and start there and see what your pistol likes.ive used 2400 and sr4759 in my 44 mag but havent found my " pet load".

Danno
I have the downloaded VV manual from the web, it does not list any N110 loads.
I would be happy to email this to you if you have interest.
its about 1/2 Mb in size.

if you are just looking for a KickA$$ load in that 45colt, check out the load offered by CORBON - WOW, 300grainer doing about 1300fps My friend shot a few of those, but not too many ! -bubba

I like 2400 in my RBH 45LC. It's a little dirty but I deal with in my .44mag. and 45LC. I don't shoot 230 XTP'S and my Hornady maual doesn't list them. It does have Ruger and T/C section. I cast wheel weights for hunting and use Lee's 250gr, 255gr, and 300gr. SWC molds. I use the 300gr. for hunting.

This thread was dead for so long that I 'bout gave up on it. Corbon loads their rounds a LOT hotter than anything apparently recommended by Speer! So does my gunshop acquaintance! We can use both straight walled pistol cartridges and ML's during shotgun seasons here in Iowa. My main reason for carrying the Colt .45 would be a follow-up shot for the Savage, not that I should really need it doing my part with that particular ML!! ;D

I have not loaded 45LC's but I would be concerned about what the brass could handle. It is not as heavy as 44 magnum brass so I would give any fired hot load close inspection before a reloading again. H-110 woulds be a good choice with what my experience with the 460 S&W. Work up with the minimum load on the Hodgdon's tables and watch the brass and primer for excessive pressure. I have not tried the Vn-110 because it is not available locally.

After many years of loading heavy .44 mag and 45 LC, I have settled on 23 grains of H110 behind just about any 300 grain bullet for the 45 LC +P. Honady xtp, speer, lbt flat noses, all work great. Typically you will get about 1300 fps actual vel. from a 7.5 inch bbl. or about 1200 with a 4.5 inch bbl.
Don't try these in anything but ruger blackhawks, old vaquaro's, TC's etc.
These are 45 LC +P so hang on tight or you may get a sight imprint in your forhead.
The old Hodgdon manuals had good 45 LC +P loads for lighter bullets if you can find one.
Good Luck

If I am not mistaken , the 230 grain XTP bullets are made for the 45 ACP . They do not have a cannelure or crimpimg groove . This will usually cause problems when trying to load them in a revolver with anything other than light loads . Hornady does make XTP 45 caliber bullets with crimp goooves designed to shoot in revolvers . I use the 250 XTP in 45 Colt and the 240 XTP Mag in 454 Casull . In the 45 Colt , I usually use H4227 or Lil Gun . In the 454 , I always use H110 . In my Hodgdon manual , there is a section of loads for T/C and Rugers in 45 Colt . Most of these loads should be good safe loads for deer hunting .
