I have a Ruger GP100 - 4inch - .357 Mag. I have a ton of .38 brass. Can I load the .38 brass with loads recommended for .357 to shoot in my pistol?
For instance. The speer manual lists a min-max of 16.5 - 18.5 gr of Vihtavori N110 for a 125 grain bullet in .357. If the .38 case can take that much powder can I shoot it in my .357? Are there other considerations?
Just curious?

If you start low and work up looking for pressure problems I believe it could be done. The two cases are only 1/10 " difference in lenth. This was done so a .357 could not be used in a .38. Because the .38 case has a little less volune your pressure will be a little different. So just keep an eye on it and don't rush. The new manual #13 is more conservative it list the min-max as N110 = 16.8 to 17.8 my older # 8 book has and even higher max load. From the #8 book I could barley get above the min load in any of my hand guns before the load seemed real hot. The draw back to 38 brass is a dirty cylinder and less case volune

One other problem could be if some one shooting with you or you put one by mistake in a .38 by mistake. It would not be pretty. Mechanicly it will work Safty wise be carefull

Joe21a,
Thanks for your input. Your second post is VERY wise. Even if I shoot alone there is a chance for disaster. If the ammo sat around, even if marked properly, and I got hit by a beer truck, someone may inherit little disasters in disguise. Point well taken. Thanks.

Gas cutting could be a problem.

How and why?

Distance from the end of the cartrdge and beginning of the forcing cone. Cylinder gap factors in. Velocity will be somewhat less for identical loads special vs mag brass. Gas cutting more prevelant on non gas checked lead than jacketed. Gas has more time escape past the bullet while still in the cylinder. Less efficient.

At the most you could load the 38 brass to +P velocities and still be safe in the event you might use these in a 38 spl. Also I am not so sure that 38 spl brass is made to the same specs in the web area of the brass as 357 mag brass.
