I have quit a few handguns for hunting. S&W 460 Mag PC 7.5 inch barrel and a Bushnell 2X6X32 scope BFR in 500 Mag with an Ultra dot Match dot sight on it. It has been customized by Mag-na-port. I also have a BFR in 45-70 with an Ultra dot Match dot sight on it. I carry my Ruger Blackhawk in 45 Colt and my back up guns are a S&W 500 Mag 4 inch and a custom Ruger Super Redhawk in 454 Casull with a 2 1/2 inch barrel.
I have taken a lot of deer and boar and black bear with my handguns.

My first year for handgun hunting. My season will begin 11/29 and I will have my 10 ML-II for longer shots and my S&W 460 Mag for everything else. I am using the Federal 275 gr. Barnes 460 S&W. I have less than 2" groups @ 50 yrds. from a Steady Point rest. I feel good with the S&W XVR out to 50 yrds but I think it could be good much farther than 50... I just don't have the confidence to shoot longer.

I really do love handgun hunting. I only have one revolver ,so far, for this purpose which is a somewhat modified Super Redhawk .44 Magnum. I have taken over a dozen deer with it and it will never leave my gun collection. I do have the .460 on my wish list and will probably be my next gun purchase. I set the handgun aside for our first season to try out the new savage 10ML. I think the redhawk will have to come back out at least once this coming weekend.

I am heading there soon. I believe I want a 41 mag. My wrists have been rebuilt and I don't want to beat them anymore than necessary. I believe I will get a coveted Wisconsin bear tag this year, for sure next. I go with friends that hound hunt and when the bears are in the corn it is really something. Three to five hundred pounders walking and fighting hounds in a cornfield. I plan on my 10ML if we tree it and a 41 if we don't.
I am still uncertain as to Red or Blackhawk or S&W.

330 yards HOLY $@#*! I got a smith 629pc lighthunter .44 last year, its 2 out of 3 so far(my bad). I got a few with the gp100 .357 before I got that one, had to move up for lack of a consistent, bleeding exit wound. I hate losing deer. I figured out that I do better at ranges 60 yds or less.
330 yds HOLY $#!^ deadeye's handle is right.

I used a scoped super blackhawk in 44 mag during the muzzle loading season here in Iowa. I took several deer, but I was only comfortable shooting out to seventy yards or so. I purchased a Savage MLII to extend my comfort range. Since owning the Savage I havn't used the handgun for deer since.

I have yet to make a kill with my S&W 460 but it is with me throughout the gun season. I want to try for Elk in the future. I feel confident out to about 100 yrds. I have a 2X Luepold handgun scope. I still feel best with my 10MLII. I use the hand gun for less than twenty-five yards.

GWG, I have to admit that after trying out the 10MLII that the knockdown power is hard to beat and is a big confidence builder. There is still something special about using the handgun though. I think I will try for a wild boar in the near future with the .44 or maybe the.460 (if I ever get one picked up). How is yours to shoot? I have never had the opportunity to try one out. Maybe you could show up at the Savage shoot next month in Indiana and let me send a few downrange (hint, hint).

I have an Encore 7-08, and a Contender with a 10" VVCG 44mag barrel. I've taken deer with both of them, and they do a nice job. Longest shot was 185yds off hand with the Encore. Nice 10pt buck that someone else had already wounded. Basically they had shot him in the front knee. I thought he was going to walk right too me, so I laid the 7-08 down and picked up a 44 mag revolver. Then he turned and walked out across the middle of the field and stopped. I couldn't get a clean shot by leaning on something, so I took a couple of deep breaths and took the shot off hand. Needless to say I did a LOT more shooting back in those days.
Since I got my 10ML-II the Encore stays in the safe a lot, and the 44 goes along as a spare.

Just picked up a Redhawk SS 41 mag. 2x Leupold and 270 rounds of factory ammo. Hogue aftermarket grips. Set me back $350. I expect I will carry it bear hunting in Michigan this year and a trip or two to the deer blind in November. I like the wheel gun idea when bear hunting... it will leave ME the last round if things go bad.

Wil,
Yea, I kind of think it was a good deal, too. I should have acted sooner, he also had a 44 Blackhawk for 250. I did have a bear trying to chew on my leg at one time. He only got a couple of little hole in.

I have Four XP-100's.....7/08. 223 Ackley, 6mmBR and a stock .223. The 22e Ack. and the 6BR are both in McMillan rear grip stocks with 2 oz. triggers. The 7/08 is in a center grip Fajen with a Hart fluted barrel. That one took an antelope at 156 lasered yards. The others have killed groundhogs and PD out in the 300+ yard range. The .223 is in its original plastic stock and was just bought for the action to build something more exotic ;D I also have a Thompson Contender with a custom Hart barrel in 7.62 x 39 which took an antelope at 220 yards. My wheel guns include a Old Ruger Blackhawk in 44 mag. (took several whitetails with it) a Tarus Raging Bull .454 Cassul (took a hog with it) and a couple of .357 colt Pythons which took whitetails. The 6BR and the .223 Ack. where smithed by myself and the 7/08 I bought at a gun show and it was built by Walley Hart up in PA. (brother of the Hart rifle barrel guy) Walley is the gunsmith and his brother makes barrels) Carlos Hathcock had rifles barreled by Walley Hart. Richard

Last year (07) was the first year I carried a handgun, nothing close enough though. I will try again this year. I use a Kimber 1911 that is more accurate than I am. I only use it in Texas though, accourding to the Texas DNR anything other than rimfire is allowed.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk that I had chambered into the 357/44 magnum. It is a lot like the Bains/davis but will work in a wheel gun with out jamming. I also have taken some with my 357 mag. DW 8" barrel, but prefer the Ruger as it has a scope and I can reach out much further.
