KENTUCKY CROSSBOW SEASON EXPANSION SURVEY
SUMMARY:
Who --- 360 Landowner (from those that owned at least 10 acres, and allowed hunting on that property
3240 Hunters (from those that bought a Combo. Hunting and Fishing License)
Demographics (of those surveyed)
LO = Landowner, H = Hunter base
· 73% of the LO's were males, 94% of the H's were males
· 54% of the LO's and 26% of the H's were 55 yrs. old or older
· 92% of the LO's and 80% of H's hunted private or mostly private lands-10% of the H's hunted only on Public lands
·56% of the LO's and 61% of the H's hunted both deer and turkey, 25% of the LO's and 30% of the H's hunted only deer, 3% of both hunted only turkey, and 15 % of the LO's and 6% of the H's didn't hunt at all
· 96% of the LO's hunted with guns for both deer and turkey, 94% of the H's hunted deer/turkey with a gun
· 57% of the LO's and 71% of the H's hunted deer with a ML, 11 and 10% for turkey w/ ML
·42% of the LO's hunted deer with Bow and Arrow, 28% hunted turkey w/ B & A
· 62% of the H's hunted deer with B & A, and 39% hunted turkey w/ B & A
·13% of the LO's and 10% of the H's hunted deer w/ a x-bow, 8% and 5% hunted turkey w/ x-bows
Top six most hunted counties are LOGAN, HARDIN, LAWRENCE, PIKE,CARTER, LAUREL
78% of those LO's polled agreed that KYDFWR has been doing a good job with the deer management program,
85% of the H's agreed also
85% of those LO's polled agreed that KYDFWR has been doing a good job with the turkey management program, and 87% of the H's agreed also.
Asked if they felt Adult gobblers were being over harvested in KY., 15% of the LO's said yes, 10% of the H's said yes
59% of the LO's support a full expansion of crossbows in the full archery deer season, Only 24% were against it
58% support full expansion in archery season for turkey as well Only 25% were against it
63% of the H's support full expansion into the archery deer season, with only 23% against
62% support the same for archery turkey season with only 25% against
Note: some were neither for nor against the expansion
When asked if expansion of the crossbow into archery season would jeopardize the turkey resource only 26% of the LO's said yes, and 21% of the H's said yes
Asked if they would support other expansion of deer/turkey season (regardless of weapon choice) in an effort to increase or retain new and existing hunters 46% of the LO's and 47% of the H's said yeas for both deer and turkey, 11% and 14% said yes for deer only, and 39% and 35% said NO they would not support expansion
