I would suspect it might work on smaller deer at close range, stalking groundhogs or other smaller vermin. Really though, its not much of a hunting caliber/cartridge. I personally would limit deer hunting to at least .357 with well placed shots. My scoped 6" Python is an excellent choice. Better is my Rugher .44 Mag. with scope or my .454 Cassul Raging Bull with Aimpoint. Richard

There was a Guns and Ammo show on a week ago that talked about this new load from Federal. It is supposed to be equivalent to a .357 magnum in power, but was intended to be used in a new small pistol from Ruger.
This gun would be used as a back-up for a policeman or could be used for home personal defense. Not sure about hunting applications.

I personally think it is a ridiculous waste of time and money.

Ok I think the guns and ammo companies really are grasping at straws to sell us whatever. What we need is a combat ready 308 semi auto like the new FN scar heavy available in semi auto for civilian shooters!

I have to wonder how long these NEW type calibers have been in the works. in the last few years we have see alot IMO. look we got the 500 S&W. then the 460 and then the 480? (i think) and now the 327. it seems that since the 17HMR took off other companies have gone for these UNIQUE and DIFFERENT calibers. some of them do have good purpose. what ya think?

I think that the 17' rimfires are pretty cool and some of the big revolver cartridges have a niche, but how many 30 short mags do we need.

I agree with Dwight. The only advantage it has over a 357 is one extra round. At a practical range for a snub nose, one round isn't worth it. IMHO anything smaller than a .357 is pushing the envelope when it comes to protection. I want to hit them as hard as possible.

well here is info i found from federal and you can take it for what you want. it compares the 357 with the 327. its only ballistic info and not an article on the two. www.federalpremium.com/products/compare/handgun_compare.aspxFederal Premium - Handgun Compare it looks like it might be nice as a personal defense gun. it doesn't hold the FPE as long as a 357 but in a personal defense situation how far are you really shooting. you might not have to worry so much as to the bullet traveling threw target and wall and injuring others. also with the advance in bullet technology it should work with out the recoil of a 357. nice for some one that might not like the recoil of a 357. as for hunting? i read some articles that said there MIGHT be a future for it. but it should be good for coyotes and ground hogs for those that like the pistol challenge.

I don't think the numbers tell the whole story. A man weighs about the same as a deer, and you also don't know if the bad guy will be jacked on dope or whatever, for personal defense it better to use the biggest gun you can handle, not the smallest you can get by with. If you consider the caliber marginal for deer sized game, you can bet it is marginal for self defense.

IMO, the whole world has gone "ballistic" in terms of new stuff. Look at centerfires: How many different 7mm or .30 cal cartridges are out there that all do basically the same thing?
IMO it's the world of constant need to be "new" and different. Not much has really changed.
The .17 HMR is truly innovative as is some of the big new handgun rounds. The Savage is innovative too. Everything else is on the edge of reinventing the wheel....IMO.

I don't think I would hunt anything larger than a squirrel with it personally. I am sure that it is a good round to carry with you while hiking, fishing, etc. But for hunting whitetails I would leave it at home and carry at least a 357, and preferably something larger.
For my ccw I carry a compact 45. For hunting I carry a 41 mag. If I need a bigger gun for hunting it is called a 10ml2.
