Guess I can brag a little because I will probably never get this lucky again. Went to a 300 yd egg shoot last saturday. This was the first time I had shot in any compition at all.You got 4 minutes to shoot 4 eggs at 300 yds,3 of us tied with 2 eggs each and one fellow got one egg.If I would have hit one egg I would have been tickled. The first egg I was shaking so bad I couldn't hold the cross hair on the egg,the second was a little better but the 3rd and 4th I had calmed down. The way I won was I had a faster time than the other 2 fellows that hit 2 eggs each.Time was 1.6 minutes. Was shooting a savage 223.The rifle had to be 11 lbs or under. You had to stand behind a marked line and when you were called to shoot your time started when you stepped across the line. To say I was excited was an under statement.I won a trophy and bragging rights so I guess I had better use the bragging rights while I have the chance. Good shooting to each of you.

Herman,
You had to stand behind the line? As in offhand? That would add a twist to what an accomplishment that was!
Either way....great shooting. Scrambled eggs.....

wilms,You got to place your rest and rifle on the beench and then you stood behind a line 3 ft behind and when he called you name you're time started when you stepped across the line, then you had 4 minutes to adjust your rifle on target and shoot at 4 eggs. You couldn't nick the egg or make it move you had to bust the egg. I thought it was pretty cool but like I said I was scarred to death I would make a fool of myself. Anyhow had a great time.

Herman congratulations. I love competition and have somehow been able to control my nerves when the pressure is on. Some people can shoot well in practice but when the shots are scored and it is crunch time they can't do well at all. A few shoots better under pressure than in practice. I never heard of an egg shoot but it sounds like fun. I may get some friends together and organize one at our private range. Interesting post. Ben

Ben you should give it a try it sure was fun.I would have had fun if I had missed all of the eggs.I think they plan on haveing this every year.I hope so I really liked it. The eggs were held up by pieces of string and they had a black curtain behind them so you couldn't tell where you were hitting. The rifle had to weigh 11 lbs or less.

I have already started the ball rolling to determine if there is interest. I expect there will be. How were the eggs attached to the strings? I like the black curtain behind the eggs. Thanks, sounds like a great idea for fun and I am going to require any semi automatics to load single cartridges. I already have the facilities. Maybe not that many wren eggs but will start collecting. LOL

Ben I asked richard and he said the eggs need to be dry not just out of the fridge, lay a piece of string on one and drop a drop of glue on it and let it set up. I think you are suspose to use fresh water fish eggs. ;D Those wren eggs are probably too big.

UPDATE: My egg shoot/cookout is to occur on the 30th and 31st of August. That is 15 days away. I picked up the trophies today for the winner and the runner up. The first day will be permitting people to zero their rifles for the upcoming season and also for the egg shoot. There will be grills, and hot dogs and hamburgers for everyone both days. The fee is $15.00 per shooter and their guests eats free. Side dishes, drinks and lawn chairs will be brought by those attending. On the day of competition my wife who is now 76 years old will fire the first shot to open the competition. At 75 yards there will be a sand rock about the size of a football sitting on top of a stump. Taped to it will be a set of deer antlers (Large 7 Pointer) which will tumble to the ground when the rock is shattered with my .243. I have no idea the speal my son will make about his mother on this one but I know she will shatter the sandrock and the antlers will tumble to earth. There will be several females shooting and my goal is for everyone to have fun. Wish some of you folks could come and show us what a Savage ML could do to a hen egg. Ben

Ben it looks like you are all set for a great fun day.You are going to have to post all the details for us that live too far away. Myself, richard and some more of our buddies are planning on going to a 300 yd shoot the 30th so we should have some fun too.We will be shooting paper but I love watching those eggs explode too. What did you plan for yardage for your shoot? I think maybe I could hit at least one egg with my 243. ;D

Not too many shooters can hit an egg at 300yds. I might like to try with my bull barrelled .308 Rem. 700... First I would have to FIND the egg, stop my heart, and guess where the egg was behind that thick crosshair, LOL..!!! I sure would have fun trying though. Great shooting Herman..!!! RICH....(ufosa)

Give it a try with your 308,Like you said it would be fun. That's the reason I shoot so much. One of my shooting buddies is disabled and I retired in 1996 and since then we have been shooting at least one day a week usually taking from 5 to 10 rifles each trip, spending most of the day shooting. He doesn't shoot the muzzleloader because of the recoil. He and I are at the range at daylight shooting reg rifles.Richard is usually there by 8:30 and then I switch to the muzzleloader and shoot with him. We have a few other buddies that shoot with us some days so you can see we have one big shooting party. Some days we do very good and some days we couldn't hit a bull in the butt. But every trip we have fun shooting.

I had meant to post the results of my egg shoot here but somehow didn't. It was a bunch of fun and although not many entered the shoot there was a good crowd and the burgers and hotdogs were good. Our range was 100 yards and any legal deer rifle for Arkansas was fine to shoot. 1st Place went to Ronnie Harness with his 22.250. 2nd and third place were shot with my Savage .243. Three of us cracked all four eggs but I came in thrird due to time used. (1 Min and 42 sec.) Ronnie did it in 47 sec. A 17 year old girl who adopted my wife and I as grandparents won second with 1 Min and 18 sec.. Several cracked a couple of eggs but also several failed completely. It was an eyeopener from some deer hunters who thought that killing a few deer made them accurate. Great fun though. Ben

Ben: Since I got Herman and our friend Bill to a couple of real shootin' matches, they are really all "hepped-up!" I think this coming year, they are both planning to join the IBS (International Benchrest Shooters) and compete on a regular basis. If I get them hooked real good, I will hopefully be building them some "real" custom guns. Watch Out! ;D Richard
