Tuesday I got a chance to try some new 140 gr VLD 7mm berger bullets through a volunteer program they had.Wanted to pass my results on for you fellows shooting a 7/08 or 7mag. Berger states on the box they are for target and game hunting. They have a high BC of .509 I will be trying them on deer this coming season. And going to shoot some more loads at 300 yds with different powders and seating depth in the next few weeks. I was useing a factory rem 7/08 and a ruger 7 mag. I don't work for berger bullets so I have no interests wether anyone buys their bullets or not.Since they were kind enough let me test their new bullet I thought I would pass it along to anyone interested.

Herman I'd be interested in how well they do on game. and how they expand and what they look like so if you could post a pic of them I'd appreciate it. my friend reloads for a 7mm mag and ill forward this post to him.

Whyohe, encloseing a pic think you will be able to read the label on the box.I don't know if these are on the market yet or not.I looked on several places this morning so I could order another box but none had them listed.I did order a box of 6.5's in 130 and 140 grs.Going to try them alsoon deer. From what I have read on other fourms and from berger the VLD bullets are great on deer. They have a web site if you want to read up on their bullets. One good thing about these bullets is that you can shoot them with a slower twist rate compared to some of the others.

A guy at the range uses the 210gr VLD in his 300 Ultra Mag for elk hunting, pretty sure he has taken at least one, 545yds IIRC, maybe 645yds. Our range is only 200yds so he does not shoot there very often but if I remember the next time I see him I will ask how they did.

Yes,these were all at 100 yds.Have some of the best loads loaded up to try at 300 to see how they do. May get to try that next week have a bad eye infection in my left eye, allready been to the doc twice this week, seems to be getting better now. DW pass on what you find out, will be interesting from actual experience.

Finally got around to getting a pic of the bergers at 300 yds. They shot very well in both rifles so now all I have to do is wait for deer season and see how well they do on live game.

I just tried some 90 grain Berger VLDs in my .223 this week for the first time and was very pleased. The best load was 20.5 grains of varget and and a total length of 2.617". 100 3 shot groups were .248" and .296". 200 yard 3 shot groups were .374" and .775".
What I really liked was when I called Berger for load info they ,1, didn't try to sell me a book, 2, they emailed me load info for just about every powder imaginable.
Good people

Sounds good graig what twist do you have in your 223? In one of the post below I posted about a shelin 260 barrel I put on a savage.Tuesday I loaded up 9 (140 VLD) berger bullets with 3 different col's.the best group I got at 300yds I covered with a dime,so the length of col makes a difference with these bullets. The first 3 were .010 off the lands, the second was on the lands and the third was .010 into the lands (this was the best group). With the 7mm 140vld the best group was .020 off the lands. If you try into the lands be sure and start with a little less charge and check for pressure signs as you go. So far I have tried the 60 gr 224cal,140vld 7mm and the 140 vld 6.5 and all have been awesome. For anyone interested in these for a game bullet you can go to their site and it tells you which bullets to use for game. Thanks graig for sharing your results,I am going to be trying more of their bullets in the future.

Herman, my barrel is a 26" stainless heavy varmint 7" twist. I just started reloading and am learning on the fly. I don't have a chamber gauge or a bullet comparator yet. I seat a little more at a time until I can close the bolt without rifling marks on the bullet.
I am considering using the 90 grain on a Texas deer this year, they are small down there.

Was thinking you must have a faster twist. In my 223 with a 9 twist I cn shoot the 75 gr hornady a-max and the BTHP very well.can shoot the 80 gr some but not that good. There are different ways to measure the chamber, one is useing a cleaning rod and one is with a bullet and a fired case. The 90's should work.Contrary to what some say I have used a match bullet for deer in several calibers over the years and haven't had one to fail yet. Good luck to you on your hunt.

He said he has taken probably 15 deer with that bullet and all were pass throughs to the best of his knowledge. He said the exit holes were usually around 1-2 inches. He also knows the guy who took the long range elk with the 210gr VLD and said that he was almost certain it was a pass through.

I have some of the 140 bergers with the thin jacket to try tomorrow. These things have a .640 BC.now they should sail out to 1000 yds. These are 6.5 caliber for the savage 260.I don't remember if I had posted this group or not but it is some 140,a-max and 142 sierras I shot last week with different powders. The week before I shot a one holer at 300yds with the berger 140 that has the thick jacket, the BC on it is.593.The one with the .640 says on the box it is good for game so may try it on deer. Where we went hog hunting last year the fellow that owns the place said that he and his buddie used the berger for deer and hogs out of their 300 ulta, but don't remember what grain he said.

I have a sporterized 6PPC(12 twist) and shoot 70,74,80g Bergers out of it. The terminal performance of both Bergers and Starkees(out of business) is excellent on deer. The 75 A-max out of the 22-250 AK IMP has good terminal performance as well. The 60 Nosler Partition and 53 Barnes out of 223 has also been very good. I guess that if you get a relatively good hit, most things work well. All these bullets expand well but not explosively. Who says you can't have accuracy and great terminal performance?
