I seen a test plot of the same/simular soybean in Illinois a few years back. Even though they were planted in like 30" rows they made a solid mass of soybeans about 5-6' tall that you needed a machete to hack a path thru.

Here is the scoop, They are called Tyrone forage soybean and developed by the USDA (they have two other varities being licensed, Derry and Donegal). They are mainly a crop for silage. Do not pay Monsterplots price of over $100 for 24lbs, it is a rip. If you search some of the seed companies you can find the seed for less then $50 for 50lb. A lot of the seed crop for 2008 got wiped out so you might have to wait till this fall for the seed to be availible. It is also in demand so along with the energy prices forcing cost up watch for pricing. A couple of seed companies are Cooper Seed and Eagle Seed, they are decent on pricing but they are geared toward food plot planting. For the lowest price look for a company that sells to farmers.
The varitiy was developed for silage use or if you did harvest it for the bean it produced a large amount of soybean straw. The problem being it chokes most combines so dairy and livestock farmers are mixing with corn and chopping it green for a hi-protien silage.

Rossman, How sure are you about the Tyrone variety in Monsterplots? It makes sense. I breed and develop soybeans here at Eagle Seed and we evaluate Tyrone and all of the other forage soybeans, since that is our specialty. Our soybeans will out grow Tyrone, but never reach 10 feet as they are claiming, unless you plant our viny soybean that will cimb all the way up a corn taslle. Our biggest differences are our large leaf size, taller height, and the Roundup Ready gene we have that allows you to spray glyphosate over the top anytime to kill the weeds and not the soybean.

I forgot to mention that you have to have the sorghum in the mix to reach the 10 feet tall that they claim. If you say it is Tyrone, then that variety as I know it does not stand up very long. It has a weak stalk. We selected for a larger stronger stalk. We look at thousands of different soybean lines each year in our soybean breeding program and have the most tonnage of any soybean available. I have some updated pictures at www.eagleseed.com or call me direct at 870-684-7377. I would like to talk about what you know. Thanks, Brad.

Brad,, we appreciate your expert input on this. The info I got was from my cousins brother-in-law who farms not far from the test plot I seen a few years ago in central Illinois. I called him for the scoop and he remembered the plot which he thought was backed by the USDA and/or University of Illinois-Urbana. I explained the Monsterplot beans and he gave me a lecture from what he knew on forage beans (farm boy with a degree). As far as the Monsterbeans being Tyrone that was an assumption which I passed on. Your remark about the weak stems does carry a lot of weight because the test plot I seen nothing was growing straight up and it explains when growing it for silage they will mix it with corn.
After quick research on the net it seemed your Eagle Seed Company and Cooper Seed Company seemed to be the top ones out there with decent pricing and and pretty much no BS smoke screen which is why I deemed you worthy of a plug in my earlier post and I don't give out plugs easily. It is good to see you take interest in the board and you may get more phone calls from some of us then you bargained for. I will try to give you a call and we can swap some info.

I found a Iowa dealer for eagle seed about forty miles from me. I am going to try a bag next spring and see how it turns out. I planted two acres of beans and 1/2 acre of corn this year in food plots.
