Today, July 12, 08, I saw a buck in velvet with a nice rack. How much larger will it be expected yet to grow. This is in Ohio. Thanks

I have game camera set up at mineral lick. Like DW said the bucks coming to mineral are gaining about 2" a week. Fun to see what develops. Last two years velvet sluffs off in Sept. When velvet sluffs off it takes about 1 1/2" off of tips and ends of antler growth. Eveidently the hard antler stops back aways in the velvet

When in velvet the antler is a growing part of the body complete with blood vessels. When done they calcifiy or harden and the velvet comes off. When they calcifiy they shrink a bit, not so much in length but in diameter. The big buck around here I seen in velvet year before last and it looked like he had a 3" diameter main beam but when I seen him later after the velvet was off it was less.

It is like the fastest growing membrane known to science. One of those deer food companies says 50" in one month with their brand but it still boils down to diet. Lots of protein and the major minerals of calcium and phosphorus. The deer are really pounding the mineral supplement I put down Memorial day and it looks like I will have to more down. I think it is the way to go, a good mineral supplement with vitamins for a good healthy deer population. It kinda makes me think why I should make the effort when some local hilljack will spotlight the good bucks months before the season but those healthy young does are mighty fine tasting.
