Hello, new to the board today and have already learned a quite a bit. I have been shooting a Thompson Omegae .50 BP rifle for a few years now and was wondering if anyone has used one the those breech plug conversion kits that allow the use of a .25ACP case and primer instead of the 209 primer. Does it work as advertised? Seems I cannot get rid of the excessive blowback no matter what powder I've used thus far and am looking for ways to clean things up. I like the though of using the small ammo case as well, much easier to re-prime in cold weather.

I have on in my Omega and it does help eliminate blow back as well as making the installation of the primer easier especially with a scope on the rifle. I have not seen much improvement in accuracy although the crud ring is a little less with 777 when rifle primers are used in place of the old standard 209 primers.

On my Omega I started using the Winchester 777 209 primers. It really is a noticable difference in both the crud ring and the blowback issues when using 777 powder or pellets.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to try the 777 Primers and some of the new Blackhorn 209 Powder, providing I can find some locally first. Will be less expensive that buying the new breechplug.

If you are going to BH 209 you will need a lot hotter primer than the 777's especially when it gets really cold. Really needs a true shotgun primer or better yet a magnum primer.
