well i was going out to do some shooting and i promised to take my best friends boy since he had to work. he is 11 years old and we are getting him ready for the mentored youth hunting this year. his father gave him a military 7MM Mauser to use and sight in for him. i brought my 44 mag lever action for him to try and see which one he liked better and fit him better. well i let him shoot the 44 mag first and had to teach him a few things. he learned the hard way to hold the gun snug to his shoulder and i think it made him a little shy. he would hold that shoulder up as he pulled the gun tight. but after showing him and repeated telling him to relax the shoulder he got good fast. he got a 2.5 inch group at 100 yards his first day shooting. not bad , not bad at all IMO. then i put up one of those life size deer targets and let him shoot. the first shot was perfect hight but just 1.5 inches behind the heart. i told him great shot but that he had pulled the trigger and that was the only reason he hit there. so i let him try again and reminded him to squeeze the trigger and he hit the heart.
during the season if we can keep him calm hell be just fine!!

What you are doing is very rewarding. I have helped several youngsters the shooting basics and also several the techniques of hunting to include navigation and how to prevent getting lost. The hunter able to go into strange places in the woods without fear of getting lost can really enjoy the great outdoors along with the sport of hunting. Good job. Ben
