I have a removed std Sav 10-ML-2 recoil lug here. Here are it's thicknesses: top - 0.0186", rt side - 0.0187", l side - 0.01855", bottom - 0.0189+"(this is measured where the barrel was over the bottom part. The 1st 2 measurements were almost exactly on the line of "6" and "7". The last measurement was appx 0.0002" , ie 0.01892". All my SSS recoil lugs are on the rifles: and I don't want to remove, just to measure. I'll likely switch 2 barrels/receivers soon; and if I do, I'll measure and report. I made a mistake - too long measuring bullets, etc. I was 1 decimal point off. Move the decimal point on all figures 1 to the right, ie 0.186", not 0.0186". An astute member of this board caught my mistake.

I noticed that your recoil lug was very thin, I just thought you were trying to reduce the overall weight of the gun. Cutting weight wherever you could. The thicker ones are .229.

Good for you jims. We batted it around all night and none of us caught it until you did! Well, my lug seems to measure 0.192 just outside the lug nut, but I don't trust my calipers to be very precise. Skipping one step past the lug business, I wonder if you wanted to measure the alignment of the action to the bore, how you would do it? Maybe if you took out the breech plug, and bore sighted the barrel, with the action clamped in a vice, and then bore sighted the action, if one could be centered in it, and see how close the dots are. Just thinking. If this topic is still of interest to some, maybe something can come out of it. With SW's new figures, I would be interested to know if others are similar.

Clarification: Although I noticed at the posting SW's decimal mistake, I did not contact him. Another member did. I just want to clear that up. I slip up on the keyboard myself on occasion.

Well, it seems again Edge has tried to make it look like Richard builds crooked rifles. The fact is, Richard builds straight rifles and has been shooting them COMPETITIVELY for the past 16 years and winning a fair share of matches. All by the way, verifiable thru the IBS (International Benchrest Shooters) records available to the public. The fact that I do use ground/parallel recoil lugs (when I use them) on my match rifles is because it is necessary to assure proper alignment with the action and barrel. He seems to always leave out the fact that competition center fire rifles have a SHOULDER on the barrel. Follow this: Action face square to the centerline of the receiver......recoil lug ground parallel........... shoulder of barrel square to the centerline of the bore. With all three units square, the centerline of the action is in alignment with the centerline of the bore. NOW, take this Savage...............it HAS no shoulder on the barrel period.....so the the recoil lug (if it is not perfectly parallel is not going to cause the barrel to be out of alignment with the receiver! The only thing that is going to cause the Savage barrel to be mis aligned is either the barrel threads cut out of square or the receiver threads out of square. Is that so hard to comprehend? Richard

richard, the thread has run its course! You wrote what you wrote, I never added words to your posts! Folks can read what you wrote and read what I wrote and take away whatever they want....let's let this thread die a merciful death edge.

I would never have dreamed that this much milage could be got out of a simple recoil lug. Surely the goat has indigestion. If you kids don't stop this jawin I may decide to take a switch to both of you and put you to bed without your grits. Ozark

Thanks Ozark, you made me laugh out loud. As for the kids (young goats?), nobody ever accomplished anything worthwile without at least a little ego. In this case I'd say they've both accomplished plenty. An occasional disagreement is healthy and (sometimes) progress is made as a result.

Amen!! Thanks everyone for putting up with our petty bickering ;D This is a great message board and besides our differences, I appreciate Edges doing a good job monitoring it. Richard

We might not always agree , but we always learn something new. I would not want it any other way. Thanks to all.

I guess I was needing a belly laugh and when I read: He's touching me." I got a good one. It was so typical of kids arguing and fussing that I just had to crack up. Thanks to Richard and Edge for setting the stage for making my day. I was under a bit of stress as the Angel was undergoing major foot surgury. Surgury went fine, she is in the recovery room and will be there about an hour and get to come home. My two daughters are with her. One is a nurse with 31 years of experience so she will be in good hands. That and the good belly laugh has put me in a good mood. Now, it is to the couch and a nap. Have a good day all. Ben

Got back from fishing a few minutes ago, and was surprised to see the old lug thread was still going. It may seem ironic, but this thread had really increased my desire to learn more (but not on this thread ;D). Good luck Ozark, hope things turn out well for Mrs. Boyd. Pete
