What gun upgrades, powder, bullet, sabot experimentation do you members have planned? Please include any deer hunting projects.
Winter is the best time to work on new loads, less wait time, ranges less crowded, mimics hunting conditions, and your not rushing to get a repeatable accurate load before hunting season.
The .45 experimentation will be sabotless so temperature will not be a concern as much. The goals are an accurate load for the 250SST with H4198 and working with the 300SST and either 10X or H322. A new compound is in order for bow season also.
What you guys got up your sleeves?

I'm going with a .45 pacnor this year! I want to try sabotless but I would like to work on a low recoil sabot load also. My youngest daughter will be on her first deer hunt this year. It would be nice to double with the Savage. It seems there are quite a few option sabotless so it will be a lot of fun and time. I would like to have a load that would perform the same 5 out of 5 times. My .50 with sabot doesn't give me that feeling. I do think this should be a good year for the .45 with all the new shooters. Oh ya,I need to build one more permanent stand for the cold days!

It is -38*C here in Winnipeg Canada.
I think I will just read about the loads that you southern boys are developing and try them out in a few months.

I wanted to shoot the Admiral at a local shop but I'm afraid I might not be able to put it down.

Over the winter I prefer indoor preps for Spring. 1) New Range Scope. Have decided to go with VORTEX Viper 3x9x40. Ordered 2) Prep barrel/bore with SLIP 2000 to see how well it’s claim will reduce plastic fouling. Ordered 3) Working on my own version of a cleaning tool. Just need to construct a punch-out die as cutting sanding discs by hand is a pain. Already have load experiments planned, prepped (except for powder) and ready to go. Ed

I Have 2 projects for this winter I have a new pac 45 barrel that will be Installed next week and Intend on getting the load development worked out before spring. The second project is a savage LRPV that is getting a new lilja . 22-250AI Caliber barrel Installed I intend to shoot 40G of varget and a 50G hornady vmax bullet @ or very close to 4000fps. With this project I will be forming 243 winchester brass into 22-250AI that will entail several passes thru forming dies and then neck turning to fit the chamber.

As it stands right now my goal in 2009 is to work up a very accurate load for either the 250g Barnes Spit-Fire flat based bullet or the 250g Bonded Shockwave. I don't care if I end up shooting it at 2200 fps or 2600 fps as long as its accurate. I'm looking at both single powder loads and duplex and have tried both just recently. So far my results have been mixed. In addition I'm going to have my gun bedded and have the 3rd action screw added. All that being said...If certain things fall into place then a .45 Pac-Nor will very likely get the call next season. The idea of shooting the 195gr Barnes at 2600-2700 fps is sounding more and more appealing.

If my calculations are correct that is 36.4 below zero 'Merican. I am relatively certain that this H4198 would not fire until May or June at that temperature. Just thinking about those temperatures makes me glad I didn't decide to work on the Tar Sands.
I have a single project that has turned into a dual. The initial plan was to check my ML's accuracy versus degree of plastic fouling versus methods of removing the plastic. It has morphed into making the gun go bang with 250 gr xtp bullets over H4198. The bullet and powder were chosen to mimic my hunting load of 250 TMZ over H4198.
My current deer hunting project is to locate some new hunting grounds.

Aquire a "simple" Savage ML for my friends son. (Anyone got one?)
Shoot big sabotless bullets in my .50.
Build 1 - 2 box blinds in spots already chosen.
Take down and put up treestands.
Replace the accu-trigger on ozarks gun with a real trigger so I can shoot it....and like doing it. (Got a trigger already from rpl10ml ;D)
Shoot woodchucks with my savage this summer.
Eat up a bunch of venison

I put a Nikon Monarch 2.5-10x42 on my Savage, and I'm planning on doing some 300 yd shooting with it. I'm hoping the BDC reticle will greatly assist me with that, but we'll see.
I also want to burn up some of the Reloader 7 that I have sitting around, I want to shoot up some of the 290gr TMZ's and 250 TMZ's that I have, to see if I can finally get some kind of acceptable, repeatable accuracy from them.

Working on loads and bullets for the 40. Looking to reduce some .410 bullets to .400 for sabotless loads and to try some .357 bullets in 150 to 180gr weights with 410 wads. Want to get a stronger bullet for deer hunting than the XTP 200s. Will be working with H322 and 4759/Varget duplex loads.

killahog, your new 22-250 AI reminds me of a shot I made more than 50 years ago on a fence-sitting crow with a .220 Swift loaded to 4110 fps. He seemed to explode in a cloud of black feathers, but when I approached the fence he was walking around like he was drunk. That little bullet at that great speed defined the word "frangible".

1. Bench fire my .45 at 300 yards. 2. Test real world differences among various breech plugs. 3. Maybe look for a plinking substitute for the 275 Parker BE. 4. Explore deer trails now that the leaves are down. 5. See what SW decides to buy as his next X-bow.

Take the high back executive chair out of my box stand because I fall a sleep to much. ;D I 'm just going to build a L shape bench seat and start taking one of the grandkids with me.
I going to shoot more 250 TMZ with 46 grains of N110 powder. I shot this combo with a one inch group and no sabot disruption at over 2400 fps. I just hope I can do it again. Steve

1 Finish the 358 Win. 2 Start a 257 Roberts AI. 3 Figure out how to get a machinist friend build a die set to reform Rem 458s like Smokeeater does. 4 Install 3rd action screw on the Savage.

1. Sight in my Savage with a new scope, a Sightron Big Sky 3.5-10x42. 2. Switch to 300 XTP from 250 XTP (after reading the many posts) 3. Want to try a couple of new powders along with 5744. (can't wait for that load spreadsheet!) 4. Install a winch on my new Polaris Sportsman 500 atv. (aside from my 10ml, the best deer hunting tool I own) 5. Reposition several treestands and hang several new ones. 6. Buy a new Summit climbing stand and give some mobility to my repertoire. 7. Get the boat and gear ready for perch fishing. 8. Try my 10ml on woodchucks this summer.

I am going to get a load for a 300g Gold Dot or a Barnes TSX 45/70 bullet (Barnes Part # 45843). I am going to improve all my ladder stands to have "Wings" on them. This allows you to improve a cheap River's Edge or Comfort Zone tree stand so you can sit "side saddle" on the stand---not just face forward. See this for a description of how to do it: www.the-gleasons.com/How%20to%20make%20Wings%20for%20Ladder%20Stands.pdfBuy a good air rifle and practice with my 7 year old grandson. Chap PS. Next time I go to one of my stands with wings. I will take a picture of the entire stand, a pictue of the bottom of the foot area and the Stop Sign inserts to strengthen up the ladder stand. In this way, I am helping to improve the safety and welfare of our MLing community. Happy 2009. What gun upgrades, powder, bullet, sabot experimentation do you members have planned? I will continue my annual assualt on the local woodchuck herd, probably with 300 grain Remingtons. I really hate to hunt dangerous game with anything less and the BOs are a little pricey for that. Glad to see Wilms is jumping on the band wagon.
I'll be keeping a close eye on you .45 guys and see how long I can resist.

Well my goal for 2009 is, well a couple things.
1. Sell my Hoyt trykon and get a Crossbow a Bowtech StrikeForce As Nj is said to be allowing them in all archery seasons. SO thats way cool to me. Oh and to kick in the pants an UBNJ member who think that the woods belong to them and think Xbows are evil and should be only used for handycapped Bull S%^&T. Can't stand when people think they have the right to tell me what I can hunt with and when. We all need to support everyhunting method to continue our heritage and not let the anti's get a foot hold and stop hunting like they did our bear season.
2. Buy a Henry Ball 50 Cal and then convert my current savage to a Pac Nor 45 for some more fun in the sun and do load development.
3. Take off my current scope on my savage 10ml II which is a Nikon 2x7 and then take the scope from my 270 weatherby mag a nikon 4x12 and put on my savage then buy a new scope for my 270 weatherby mag. This is only a maybe as I really want a lighted retical for my guns as I like them for hunting in the deep pine barrens of NJ where its still dark to to heavy canopy at legal shooting time. I like the lighted reticals
4. Buy an MGM 22mag for my Encore handgun to shoot some bushytails. or maybe a 22-250.
5. Join Central jersey rifle and pistol club to do some serious shooting with my custom Encore handguns.
6. Go striper fishing more on my new Hobie Outback in salthingyer for stripers and blues and flounder and some tiderunners.
7. Take a much needed vacation with the family to disney or the disney boat cruise.
8. Spend more time with family as this past year my wife went from possbily dieing to doing GREAT. so much needed time with family.
9. Get a Ladder stand a two person one that is tall as I can find atleast 20 foot to bottom of platform.
10. Find some new hunting areas to try to change my luck a bit with some bigger bucks and to continue to let the small bucks live to hopefully get bigger.
11. Continue to keep telling my club members to shoot the does and not the young bucks spikes and forkers and small basket sixes or even the basket eights. This is mostly impossible but hey i have to try or they will never get bigger.
12. Try spring turkey hunting as I never did it before and we have TONS of turkeys around our area. so I want to give that a shot so to speak.
13. Get a choke for my benelli SBE 12 guage that is made to pattern buck shot better. Saw one in my many mags I get to see if I can tighten the pattern up a bit.
14. Go shooting way more than I did this last year as with my wife being sick and now recovering to allmost back to normal and working I didn't get to do much.
Well just a few things I would like to do.
