If you or one of your crew kills a deer with a .458 Barnes 300 gr original, make a post. I thought it would be neat to keep track of how many deer are killed with this bullet this year. If you recover a bullet lets see a pic of the bullet. I bet that will be a somewhat rare appearance. Make a post here and I will keep watching this thread and add up the score on this first post using the edit feature.

Add 1 for me. Shot an eight point with the BO and I think I will have a recovered bullet to show. I can see where it broke the rib on the far side angling toward the shoulder but don't see an exit hole.
I was sitting in my stand when I heard the guy that was hunting about 200 yards behind me let loose with 5 shots and on the 5th shot I could hear the slug skipping through the trees in my direction so I knew he didn't get the deer and it was coming my way so I got ready. I saw the buck running down the edge of the cornfield coming towards the property I was hunting and I decided that he was a shooter. As he crossed the property line I tried to stop him or at least slow him down for a second with a sharp hey but after being shot at 5 times already he was on a mission. He was running but not full speed at about 120 yards when he hit the property line and I was pretty sure I could make a good shot so I led him around 2', followed and pulled the trigger. He was angling away and about 150 yards by the time I shot and caught him a little far back but the bullet still made it to the chest cavity. (with a loud thud that sounded like shooting a groundhog with a varmint rifle). He made it 20 yards before he went down. As I got down to look at him I saw the neihbor coming along the edge of the field and I figured he was going to come over and say that was his deer and he shot it but instead he turned the corner and went home, I guess he was a little upset. If I find the bullet I will post it if I can figure out how.

Add one Doe to the count. Was only 80 yards away, load was left in gun for the past 3 days.Load consisted of 300 BO,Harvester BCR,67 grains Reloader 7 and a Fed 209A primer.Shot was "High Shoulder" and the Doe went straight down,DRT. I left the gun loaded on purpose to see if there was going to be any ignition issues with the RL7.The temp here has been around 30 degrees since Monday, tonight it was 28 and snowing. Was a pass-thru so no bullet to show. This is my first Deer shot with this combo, all's I can say is that I am d**n impressed! ------------- Rich

I have got 3 with the BO.
One 7 point buck last week, 50 yards brisket shot, exited on deer's RHS. Ran about 30 yards, heart and lungs were gone, plus some innards. I have also shot a small doe, one at about 30 yards, quarting away, DRT not one step and recovered the bullet from the ground. Bullet was 281.1g, flatten out from hitting the ground. Chap

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I killed three deer last year with the 300XTP.One DRT,the other two went 20 and 40 yards. Two were pass thru and one recovered opposite side under skin with 75% weight retention.I have killed three deer this year with the BO,all pass thru, one DRT both of the other two went over 100 yards(poor shot placement),both of these were caught the back of both lungs.I will finish the year with the BO's as they group a little better(1" vs 1.5") but next year I will go back to the 300XTP as they seem to do more damage on poor shot placement vs the BO.I have yet to shoot both on paper at 200 yards as this will also determined which I will shoot next year but if the XTP shoots within an inch grouping at 200 I will go with it.I shoot the BO with BCR and the XTP with MMP short, knurled, pushed by 42.1 gr of N110.XTP 2135fps and BO 2150fps.

I don't care what bullet anyone uses....it's all about shot placement. A smokin' hot TMZ or BO will not create magic with a gut shot. Bullets that shoot good....shooters that can shoot good...and making good decisions before squeezing the trigger kills deer. A good bullet is needed on the tougher angles. Since we can't decide how a deer will present itself, good bullets should be used to counter that fact. The BO is a great bullet. There are others too that will do everything this bullet can do. If you can get great consistency with 300 SST's or any 300 XTP or a copper bullet, you haven't lost one step to the BO.
The BO is an awesome bullet, but on deer class animals it doesn't stand alone.

OK guys, here's a unique Barnes Original trophy. I shot this doe tonight with one spike that is still in velvet. Everything on the other end of the deer was distinctly female. I set up on the edge of a field with a real possibility for a 200 yard shot. Naturally, I spotted the 3 flattops (or so I thought) at about 40 yards in a creek bottom to my left. I started sorting them out for size and this one was distinctly larger than one of the others. I wasn't sure about the third deer. They started my way with this one in the lead and she looked right up at me almost straight on. I put it on her neck about chest height and dumped her in her tracks. Her chest cavity was a mess and I didn't see any obvious exit hole so the bullet might still be in her. I was in a hurry to get her gutted and back to the barn while it was still light. If I recover the bullet I'll post a picture of it.

Here's my story from October. Last week I harvested two deer in Iowa with 300 gr BO and 64 gr of 4198. The first one was a doe that was walking broadside at 130 yds. The shot was a bit high and back but caught the tips of the lungs. Of course it was a pass through with a 1" exit hole and a very good blood trail. She ran about 100 yds. and went down. The other was a 1 1/2 year old 8 pt. buck. I shot him at 80 yds. head on. He was smelling me and I couldn't wait for a broadside. I was setting with shooting sticks and was confident in the low neck shot. The shot went through the spine low in the neck, after that it removed about 1" from each of the first 4 ribs. It then turned a little and hit the femur bone on the opposite side. It pulverized about 4" of the bone right above the knee. I found the bullet under the hide on the back of the leg. Needless to say the buck went straight down. The bullet weighed 274 gr after smashing all of that bone. I couldn't believe how well it held together and I was amazed that I had very little bruising or wasted meat. The guts weren't even broken up much. If I can get the picture posted you will see what I mean.

It's not the buck I've been hunting for the last week but I couldn't wait any longer. Last day of rifle season for me. I've shot over 700 rounds with my Savage off the bench and this is my first kill. This doe was shot at 243 lasered yards standing in a wheat field. 67gn H4198 and The 300 Barnes Original did everything plus some on this deer. She was standing facing me , slightly quartering. I held right where the neck and shoulder meet at the top of back. The Barnes entered just in front of her shoulder and exited just in front of her opposite hind quarter. When hit she spun around twice and then hit the dirt. Traveled 10'. Everything in between the entrance and exit holes were mush. I've shot a lot of deer and never seen that much devastation done at that range. I don't know how a guy could find a better combo than that. It was 12 degrees and no misfires. We've got another month of ML season starting December 1st. Hoping for some weather to get them moving. Zen

Can I have a half shot? Finished off my daughters first deer!!
She shot it at just a few yards past 100. I finished it with a shot at 100 yds or so with the Savage. Now it is Dad's turn to get his own!
